We've been talking about that for years. They're already on Comcast, DirecTV and Dish. It makes sense to go after that OTA segment in the big market. They did recently make a deal with KSL to get weather coverage so that could be an opening, but there isn't enough room in Ch 5's datastream to add a channel without removing something. I think NBC really wants Universal Sports there and that gets beaten up a bit as it is. Replacing 5.3 weather with KCSG would squeeze the bits and that might be more than the engineers want. I'm a little surprised there aren't a few more bits given to 5.2.
The station with the most idle bandwidth is KJZZ 14. I found a website that had a breakdown of exactly what was being used on each channel in every market in the country but I can't find it now. Anybody know what site that is? I'm not aware of anything else that 14 is using their stream for and I'm not even sure they're running HD.

The Azteca LD's have plenty of extra bandwidth (on 25 and 39)....Wish they'd get their PSIP fixed, though. KPNZ (24) has plenty of extra, too.

Their website also mentions that they will carry KSL Newscasts at 7 and 9 PM, starting Monday. I wonder how that will work...nobody has told us about it yet! I guess they could record the 6 off the air,and play it back at 7. But, can they record the 10 off-air, and play it back an hour earlier??

I would guess that neither of the companies that own 25/39 or 24 would be interested much in English language programming. Their focus is on Spanish programming. Something interesting I see though is that on the KSVN website, they ID the TV station only as 39. That's K39JS not KSVN. I wonder if they will end up selling 25 since it's a complete duplicate of 39 in every respect. That could be an opening.
I wonder if KCSG will be rerunning the 6 at 7 and the 6:30 at 9 or something like that. What's the breakdown of story material on each half hour? Is there a different focus during the second half hour? If the stories there are more evergreen-types it might work ok to rerun it several hours later.

I have heard that NBC Universal Sports was going to pay TV and all NBC-US affiliates will need to find something else for their subchannels once their contracts expire.
So, since KSL 5 needs a subchannel, and KCSC already has a relationship with KSL - there's a match.

The information about Universal Sports leaving seems confirmed. Scott Fybush is reporting (http://www.fybush.com/NERW/2011/111003/nerw.html) that it's going away at the end of the year. That makes sense. Comcast owns it now and they're a cable company, and this is probably tied in with the rebranding of Versus as NBC Sports Network on Jan 2. He also says that MeTV is making a lot of progress around the country at the expense of RTV. What, if anything, will land at 5.2?
