I'm posting this on the off chance that anyone might actually know of such a creature.
I'm on the hunt for a free email service that allows POP3 access and subaddressing (username+tag@where.ever gets routed to username's account).
Any leads?

gmail allows mail to be popped. Individual gmail accounts can give you virtual subaddress ability.(dolt@gmail.com, doltwidgets@gmail.com, doltrubegoldberg@gmail.com) Guess the downside is, google keeps everything in perpetuity.
Not sure what or why, on your need. If it is to be on a server for which you have administrative access, many hosting services bundle in mailstore capabilities.

I have a bunch of domains for various things, but I'm looking to add something free. Free is good. I did neglect to mention that I know of Gmail offering that type of service, though I'm a little put off by questions of privacy including what you mentioned. Their ToS goes on for miles. While I'm thinking of it, I do know that Yahoo offers the same thing, but POP access requires either a third party program that isn't officially supported and will break or paying $10/yr to have legitimate POP.

This is what I know works. I belong to a forum hosted on Integra-Net. All members have email there. I pop mine. Here is pricing and service info: www.integra-net.com/hosting.html We made membership closed(except by invitation) as it is just a bunch of old friends now separated geographically. This cuts down on spam, trolls, and time needed to clean up those messes. Members kick in for the minimal hosting cost. Having mysql allows MyBB(free open source project) to be installed for a forum. There are many themes and mods available for free. Different sections of the forum can be protected. Only those having permissions can see them. It has gone fairly well. Only one member has had a melt down requiring banishment.
