I'd been down in southern Utah for the past week. On the way back to WJ yesterday, I picked up a station on 88.9 that was playing rock. I wasn't aware of a noncommercial station that did rock other than (sometimes) the Pleasant Grove and Orem high school stations, which I was too far away to pick up. So I thought that perhaps it was a pirate. But now I know I was picking up KAGJ. www.snow.edu/academics/fineart/communication/kagj/index.html
I was on I-15, so the signal was carrying a long ways from the campus of Snow College. Where is their tower located at?

They show a 380 watt signal, from a tower on the campus at Ephraim. Could it have been tropo-ducting, or some other effect from the solar activity that's going on right now? Also, I wonder if KBYU-FM (89.1) might have had their HD turned off at that time, which normally would overlap 88.9.

Radio-locator.com shows KAGJ located off-campus to the west of Manti and Ephraim at a high altitude of 2300 feet above average terrain and their coverage area map blankets miles of I-15.

They must have moved since Wikipedia was updated. I don't have access to the FCC files like we used to. Still only shows 380 watts, so it did a heckuva good job getting past KBYU's HD sideband.

They moved from a class A at 89.5 on the Snow College campus to their current class C3 at 88.9 in the mountains west of Ephraim back in 2011.
KBYU is about 75 miles from the edge of KAGJ's very good coverage area and about 90 miles from KAGJ's transmitter. I would guess even the analog signal would be tricky at that distance and the digital signal would be almost non-existent.
KAGJ's signal would probably be fairly good along I-15 from about Nephi to Fillmore. That's a good 60 miles.
It's always nice to hear about a school who has a student run station.

Amanuensis didn't say exactly where he was hearing them, just "I-15". I suspect there's a lot of terrain shielding due to the mountains down that way, as well as the terrain south of their Mt Vision transmitter site. We should all do so well.

I don't remember now exactly where I was. South of Nephi for sure, because once I got to Nephi, I started focusing on which SLC stations I could get and which I could not. So between Nephi and Fillmore seems probable.

The reason why I am sure that it was KAGJ is because the DJ mentioned their "The KAGE/CAGE" branding.
