I noticed that KNIT 1320 built an FM translator on 94.5. licensed in December of 2021 according to radio-locator.com. KUTR 820 built a translator on 103.9 near Ogden, also in December of 2021.
Does anyone know whether AM stations are still allowed to apply for FM translators? The FCC mentions "windows" for applications several years ago, but I'm not sure what is currently allowed.
I was thinking that KIHU 1010 and KKAT 860 (and maybe others) could make use of an FM translator to improve their reception at night.

Applications for new stations are only accepted during specially designated "windows," which just means that there are a specific set of dates when interested parties are allowed to apply. There are currently no plans for a translator window. There is however a window for LPFMs that will be happening from Nov 1-8.
The big problem in the SLC area with both the LPFM window and whatever translator window may open in the future is where to put the new stations. I think there might be a few slots where a decently powered translator/LPFM could go, but not many.
If Cumulus did manage to get approved for a translator sometime in the future I would be very surprised if they wasted it on KKAT under its current format. Almost nobody is listening to it and an FM signal isn't going to change that.
