The idea is to imagine you're given ownership and complete control of 95.5. You have the resources (money, personnel, etc.) to do whatever you want with the signal without having to worry about higher ups on the corporate ladder, what clustermate stations are doing, etc. You can leave it as is, completely change it, or anything in between, but the ideas should be at least plausible/possible. What do you do?
I gave my best answer in last week's installment, but there's some question about whether that would even be possible. Terry mentioned that it couldn't be resold as commercial. That seems odd to me since BBN bought the station in a bankruptcy liquidation sale and having such a condition in a liquidation seems unlikely. I'd still like to see that contract if it's available online somewhere.
If it did need to stay non-comm I would make it a simulcast of KUSU. It seems kind of crazy that Utah State has signals all over Utah but hasn't had a presence in the state capital (or much of Davis County) for almost 20 years.

Assuming of course that everyone would go along with what I wanted, I would move the signal of KCPW to 95.5 (and have KPCW as the the HD2 -- yes, I know that the two stations are not affiliated any more, but this is my fantasy). And then I would have KUSU take over KCPW's old 88.3 frequency as its Salt Lake translator.
I would do it that way because it is my understanding that KYFO has excellent signal strength in Ogden and Brigham City, where KUSU can already be picked up pretty well. So the extra signal on 95.5 would be largely wasted there.

Doesn't the 89.5 UPR Ogden booster have coverage in Davis County? As amanuensis mentioned, simulcasting UPR on both 95.5 and 89.5 seems redundant in terms of signal coverage, especially in the Ogden/Weber County area. I can't understand why the 95.5 frequency would have a stipulation in the sales contract that KYFO remain a non-commercial station if it was sold, especially since 1490 KOGN used to be owned by Bible Broadcasting Network (BBN) also, and 1490 simulcast 95.5 for at least 10 years before it was sold & became a commercial station. One would think that the non-commercial stipulation would apply to both the AM & FM frequencies, since both 1490 & 95.5 were co-owned by BBN after they were purchased when KJQ's owner went bankrupt.

KYFO's signal comes from just west of Ogden, so yes it would have an excellent signal there and north. The KUSU signal's coverage ends at about Ogden, which is probably why there's a translator there. That translator (K208CS) provides some fill-in there, but that also fades pretty quickly heading south as I recall.
I get not wanting to overlap signals, so let's take a look at how to do that. The problem with moving KCPW to 95.5 is that while they would gain some coverage in Ogden and north, they'd lose all their coverage south of Salt Lake. There is however another solution for KUSU that I didn't think of before. The KYFO translator on 91.3 (K217FQ) was made redundant back in 2008 by the addition of KYFO's 95.5 Salt Lake booster. If K217FQ translated KUSU it would add coverage without duplicating any to speak of.
So that would leave us with what to do with KYFO. Since we're working under the assumption that it would still be a non-comm, that leaves us with few options. Maybe someone could resurrect jazz in the market?
(Back in the real world, Friendlee, did you ever try approaching BBN to see if they'd be willing to sell K217FQ?)

Maybe someone could resurrect jazz in the market? I assume that Utah's Mountain utahsmountain.com/ would jump at the chance to have a broadcast signal back again, after losing 107.9.

Interesting idea. There doesn't seem to be much there. The stream works, but the only other link I saw was 'Learn More' and that 404's.

I think "Utah's Mountain" has taken a back seat to KYWH, a/k/a "Montana's River", ever since Mike Summers took over operations of that station in 2021. I haven't heard Mike on the air at 103.1 The Wave Saturday & Sunday mornings recently either, and I'm not sure where he went.
