What would you do with.... 93.3 The Bull

This is a continuation of the series we started last week and will be continuing up the FM dial. The idea is to imagine you're given ownership and complete control of 93.3. You have the resources (money, personnel, etc.) to do whatever you want with the signal without having to worry about higher ups on the corporate ladder, what clustermate stations are doing, etc. You can leave it as is, completely change it, or anything in between, but the ideas should be at least plausible/possible. What do you do?

Country isn't my thing, but I would leave it as is. The ratings are far from what they once were but they're still pretty good, and leaving Z104 with the lion's share of the country audience doesn't make sense to me. Any reasonably popular format needs at least one competitor.

I guess I never quite understood why they changed their branding from K-Bull 93 to 933 the Bull, unless it had to do with their call letters, KUBL. I know KBUL wasn't available when they signed on. I remember several years ago, KBER 101 changed their branding to 101 the Bear. I don't know how long they kept that but they changed it back to K-Bear 101. I thought KUBL was licensed to be able to do HD. If so, I would turn that on and maybe put a simulcast of 860 on their HD2. I'll behave myself and leave the country on their main signal. It's not my thing either but they've had that format since the mid 90s and I know country is a popular format and, since the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, I'd keep it country if you put me in charge there. Since you're going to let us have a crack at other stations, I'll leave that one alone.

Because the dumb younger executives (looking at us, Gen X and Millenials) think that all you have to do is RE-BRAND and viola! All your problems go away. It was a branding issue.

The substance is expensive to fix to actually hit KSOP where they're strengths are (e.g., hire a beefier on-air staff of local jocks, push promotions harder including un-sold gigs, and hit the phones and texts hard). Changing the logo? Like $300.

But hey, that's Cumulus media.

If it were up to me, I'd wait at least a couple of ratings periods to see what happens with the new morning drive guy before making any changes. Unless things have drastically changed since I was in the broadcasting program at Weber State, morning drive is usually the biggest ratings draw because you have a captive audience. I thought Lexi and Banks were pretty popular on 93.3, but I'm a KSOP listener (either AM or FM) when I feel like listening to country music on the radio, so I really can't comment on the competition. 🙂

I feel like the Eagle has a great concept that is mainly hindered by their rimshot situation. If 93.3 took that "format" and had Rick & Carly and Pat Garrett and some others (live and local is best, obviously, but necessary for AM and PM Drive. It could be tracked mid-day and evenings if they had to be) I love the Eagle's energy and even though it's not really live, it still has a very live sound to it, which is saying something. Flip the Eagle to KOOL-FM (so that can be on an actual station). We don't need a third modern country station. Z104 is killing it and doing it right and they should just keep up what they're doing. I like the 90's to now that 101.5 does and to sum up, should be moved to 93.3 (keeping the bull brand).

No need to start a new topic. It's germane to what is (and isn't) possible for KUBL.
