I just checked 1600 a few seconds ago. I saw the D-News was listing two FM's (102.7 and 97.5), and two Sam's ((1230 and 1600) for tonight's Jazz game. No mention of the 1160 "white elephant in the room". Funny though, I wondered if last night's KSEN-1150 DX Test would have been audible around here, if KSL-1160 would shut off the HD for a couple of hours. But, I thought they stopped killing HD for games years ago. It's off tonight!! 🤔

I think you mean 1280.
I don't think there's much lost by turning the AM HD off. Turning the FM HD off, on the other hand, would mean the loss of the subchannels. The simulcast of 97.5 wouldn't matter since they're running the same program anyway, but the LDS Channel isn't anywhere else on broadcast that I know of. What other sports has KSL been running in recent years? I know of college football. Maybe football doesn't lend itself as much to listening at the venue as basketball does? (I've never done either.)

My phone seems to have a mind of it's own lately. I type 1280, and it types 1230. Since the last software update, it thinks I'm in Vegas.

Seems that they must be playing some timing games..102.7 is about seven seconds behind 1160, as would be expected with the FM running HD. 1280 and 97.5 are about one second behind 102.7. So, 1160 is running "live", without the HD delay.

In fact, I managed to hear KTSB in Tulsa on 1170 last year when KSL's AM HD was turned off. Ironically, KTSB was broadcasting in HD when I heard the station, and I actually got the HD to lock on my Sangean HDR-14 for a few seconds before the signal on 1170 started to fade out.

So, 1160 is running "live", without the HD delay. Here's a crazy thought. Could they be using 102.7 as an STL for 1280 and 97.5 (or at least the boosters)? That would explain why 1280/97.5 are so delayed without using HD themselves.

So, 1160 is running "live", without the HD delay. Bring back the Nauvoo Bell!

I wouldn't bet on that happening anytime soon. KSL hardly acknowledges its AM frequency anymore, so I certainly don't expect them to acknowledge the station's history by bringing back the Nauvoo Bell.

I'm not holding my breath, either.
By the way, am I the only one who thought from the thread title that one of the local AM stations had decided to experiment by programming jazz music? I think an AM station could do worse than putting on a blend of jazz, swing, and big band.

I think an AM station could do worse than putting on a blend of jazz, swing, and big band. Nope, I thought the same thing as you did when I first saw the title of Ken's post. 🙂 I'd love to have an NPR/public radio station on the AM band in the Salt Lake area again, like we did when KCPW was on 1010 from 2004-2009. KCPW airs "Jazz Time with Steve Williams" on Sunday nights, which is rebroadcast on the Utah Public Radio (UPR) network of FM translators, but I'd still like to have KCPW simulcast 24/7 on an AM station again. 88.3 is too weak to be heard clearly in Ogden without a rooftop FM antenna. Maybe if 1550 ever returns to the air, someone will be brave enough to try a format other than religion, sports talk, news/talk, or Spanish language programming on AM in Salt Lake City.

The title is on me, not Ken. That first post was originally in another thread. It would be a great help to me if everyone would please create a new thread whenever the thought you'd like to post differs significantly from the topic of that thread.

FWIW, 99.9 KUAA in SLC plays jazz (music- not tall guys with a bouncy ball) from 10pm till 5am.

On a related note, "Jazz Time with Steve Williams" airs Sunday nights from 6:00 to 10:00 PM on KCPW 88.3, and also on Utah Public Radio's network of stations & translators. Check upr.org for a listing of frequencies and stations.
