Anybody remember a couple of kids, probably about the age of high school senior to college, whose Dad bought them a local radio station here in Salt Lake, about thirty years ago? It was just "something to do, and to get them some experience".

I looked in the newspaper archives, and I can't find anything. Did see an interesting article on the old KKDS "Imagination Station" from 1991 with an interview from then-P.D. Tom Robin.
Your story sort of reminds me of Bob Morey in the 1980s. They moved from Wisconsin. His dad was a doctor, and I think he helped front some of the money for Bob to buy KSRR. But I'm pretty sure he was an adult and it was a serious family business investment, not quite the story you describe.

I recall a rumor that KFAM (AM 700) was owned by a bunch of dentists back when they played beautiful music. Some kind of tax reduction strategy. I have no idea if that rumor was true. But that is all that comes to my mind regarding unusual station owners. Well, them and the Hare Krisnas with 1480 AM.

The bacon company Carlson brothers’ KRSP 1060?
Or Howard Johnson’s KNAK 1280 (and more) spawning the Heber 1340?

The only information about KFAM 700 I could find online says that David Williams, who owned the General Telephone paging company of Salt Lake, was the original licensee of KFAM. That's not to say that the station wasn't sold to group of dentists (or someone else) at some point, but I rarely recall hearing any commercials on KFAM except for General Telephone. When 700 AM had an easy listening format, it was the only radio station my Mom listened to, and she almost always had KFAM on whenever I was around. www.oldradio.com/archives/stations/slc-hist.htm

Would KFAM have still been playing spots for General Telephone in the 1990s? I swear I have a memory of riding in my grandmother's car and hearing an old-timey recorded announcer talking about "General Telephone."

I remembered something about that the other day. While answering the phones for Bonneville Satellite Company (at KSL), I got a call from the daughter, telling me about the planned station, and wanting to know what satellite gear they needed to get Reverend Charles Stanley's "In-Touch Ministries" programs. They are a huge operation, based in Atlanta. I called and asked to speak to their Chief Engineer. I chatted with him, a nice southern guy named Darvin Sparks, and then thought to ask him if he was related to Ovie Sparks, who I had worked with at Capricorn Records studio in Macon, back in the early 70's. Turns out... I was actually talking to Ovie, who was going by his given name because they already had a guy there named "O.V. Sparks". Funny coincidence. Here's a video, made recently, in that very studio, and I know all three of those guys: youtu.be/gIKy5fOBA9cOld times are fun to relive.
