Hello, David. To answer your question about coverage gaps for the Zone, yes, having the Zone on 102.7 HD3 would/will be very helpful. I know of some areas in Sandy and Bountiful where 97.5 is almost unlistenable. That is cool.

It's hard to know exactly what's going on with all the tower work at Farnsworth.

Hi, David. Yeah, I checked this morning and the Mormon Channel (or whatever it's called now) was still transmitting on 102.7 HD2 but there wasn't any HD3. If the Zone is made available on KSL FM HD3 permanently, would they be required to include that in their legal ID? KZNS FM Coalville, KZNS Salt Lake City, KSL FM HD3 Midvale. That would only give them five or so seconds in the "ten seconds for station identification" that network sports brodacasts allow unless the voice guy talked really fast. I really hope it is something they decide to do though, putting the Zone on 102.7 HD3, that is.

Just noticed that the discussion about The Zone simulcast on KSL-FM has been moved, so I've deleted my post on the KOOL FM HD2 thread. FWIW, KSL-FM HD2 is now a simulcast of The Zone, and The Mormon Channel has been moved to KSL-FM HD3 . . . For now, anyway!

Actually I was in the middle of moving posts to create this thread, but no matter.
I can confirm that the Zone simulcast was put on HD2 and what I believe is called the Latter Day Saints Channel now (formerly the Mormon Channel) appears to be on HD3. There are advantages and disadvantages to doing that. Depending on how the tuning of a radio works, the HD2 would be slightly easier to get to and be a little more discoverable. The problem with that is anyone who used a preset on HD2 for the LDS Channel would now find sports talk and might not think to hunt around for where the programming they're looking for went. I don't think I would have done that. Maybe it was a setup error, but I kinda doubt that.
And yes, if Zone is on 102.7 anywhere it will need to be IDed.

I wonder if it's 97.5 or 1280 they're simulcasting. We won't know that, I suppose, until the Bees, the Aggies, and/or the Jazz have a game at the same time. My guess would be it's the FM since that's where the Jazz always are and I imagine the Jazz are the biggest draw of those thre. Although this year … well, that's probably a discussion for a different board. LOL.

It doesn't have to be only one or the other. It could be decided on a case by case basis. It could even be a third option that wouldn't have been possible before, though I think that's unlikely for now due to relatively low penetration.

I listened this evening, about 20 minutes ago. KSL-FM HD2 was carrying Fox Sports Radio (so I assume that that was The Zone. KSL-FM HD3 was the LDS programming.

As of Saturday at 11 AM (I haven't listened at the top of the hour since) but they got the legal ID wrong. KSL FM HD2 Salt Lake City Midvale. Apparently, whoever writes their scripts for the voice guy doesn't have a full knowledge about proper legal IDs. This could have been corrected since Saturday at 11 AM.

The error was that Midvale should have been mentioned first, right?

Correct. KSL-FM is licensed to Midvale.
If you want to get really pedantically technical, the way everybody identifies HD channels is wrong, but I'm pretty sure nobody cares.

Good morning CA. You said nobody cares about HDs being IDed correctly. I'll be nobody. What would a pedantically correct ID for an HD 2 or 3 subchannel sound like?

I returned the rental car yesterday, so no more HD radio for me. But before I did, I compared Business 99 on 99.5 HD2 with it on 99.1. To me, 99.1 sounded much better. 99.5 HD2 was muddy and was about 30 seconds behind 99.1. So obviously, the 99.1 translator is not getting fed from 99.5 OTA. I was in West Jordan around 90th South and Redwood.

Good morning CA. You said nobody cares about HDs being IDed correctly. I'll be nobody. What would a pedantically correct ID for an HD 2 or 3 subchannel sound like? I should have said something like "Nobody who could make trouble cares." The rules are really poorly written (IMHO). The only thing that's actually required of digital signals is to "identify its digital signal...in a manner that appropriately alerts its audience to the fact that it is listening to a digital audio broadcast." So saying something like '...and on the HD2 of KSL-FM Midvale' would work for sure. The beginning of the rules states what may be included between the callsign and the community of license, which only mentions multicast program streams in conjunction with the major channel number which must be used. For KSL-FM that would be 274. It's at the end of the rule that it mentions the quote above, but since it doesn't give any specifics about how to communicate that, I interpret it as not being permissible between the callsign and the COL. Apparently others disagree. Given how little consideration legal ID's are given across the dial, this is nothing. You can read the whole mind-numbing legalese at www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/47/73.1201 and if you want to go into further details we can create a new topic.
