This is my 4077th post, so I thought it would be appropriate to make a comment on the series M*A*S*H, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month. There are few shows that have its longevity and popularity. It's been in syndicated reruns pretty much continuously since the 70's and is currently also airing on MeTV and TVLand. Here's to 50 years and another 50 more.

I still believe that the opening notes ("Suicide is Painless") of the M*A*S*H theme, were actually the closing music for "KSL Eyewitness News at Ten". They always seemed to go together.

It's possible. The opening of SIP is a fairly simple progression. (F B D C I believe.) Is there a copy of the theme you're talking about online somewhere?

I was joking about how the final "goodnight" on the newscast segued directly to the music at the top of M*A*S*H. No commercial or even a pause... I think we even brought the music up as the wide-shot of the set showed the lights going down. It was a sad day when KSL gave up the reruns to Fox.

Ah. I get it now.
Talking about that did make me realize that KSL must have broadcast M*A*S*H during its original network run too since it was the CBS affiliate at the time. That would have made a good pairing with late night reruns, especially since CBS didn't have any real late night offerings until 1993. (Crimetime After Primetime? The Pat Sajak Show? Puleeze.)

The final episode of M*A*S*H was said to have been unique, in that water systems all over America saw drops in pressure during the commercials, as viewers went to the bathroom during the breaks. No one wanted to miss any of the show, so they all flushed about the same moment. Science is great!

Television sets at the BYU dorm I lived in circa 1985 were always tuned to Channel 5 for the sports report and then MASH.

The final episode of M*A*S*H was said to have been unique, in that water systems all over America saw drops in pressure during the commercials, as viewers went to the bathroom during the breaks. No one wanted to miss any of the show, so they all flushed about the same moment. Science is great! Oh yes, I remember reading about that back in 1983 after the final episode of M*A*S*H aired! The strain that the additional water flow put on the New York City sewer system was considerable, according to this article from the UPI archives. www.upi.com/amp/Archives/1983/03/14/The-last-episode-of-M-A-S-H-was-a-royal-flush/3459416466000/BTW, the final episode of M*A*S*H still holds the record for the most watched TV finale ever, with 105.9 million total viewers. Of course, in 1983 the "Big 3" TV networks were still a force to be reckoned with, as the internet was in its infancy, and the majority of TV viewers didn't have satellite or cable TV. I seriously doubt we'll ever see viewer numbers like that again, at least not in my lifetime! 😉

Just to emphasize even more how things have changed, the movie that aired opposite Goodbye, Farewell and Amen on NBC got an 8.1 rating and a 10 share. That's much higher than even Sunday Night Football can get today. If the Big 4 could get those numbers they'd be doing cartwheels down the hall. If The CW got those numbers they'd probably have a stroke.
