Was playing a bit outside, and heard someone playing music on 88.1. They seed to just be playing something like Urban, with no announcers or legal ID. Is that KPGR in Pleasant Grove, or KWCR in Ogden, or something else? I sort of remember KWCR as having gone silent.

It's definitely not KWCR. KWCR moved to an online only platform in October 2015, and the station's license was later sold to EMF. EMF changed the call letters to KNKL and moved the 88.1 transmitter to Tremonton several years ago. It could be KPGR in Pleasant Grove, a pirate station, or even late season FM DX. I've seen a lot of reports recently about E layer skip, so it appears that the summer FM DX season might not be "hibernating" just yet. 🙂It might also be someone in your neighborhood using a low power FM transmitter to play CD's or MP3 files on a boombox or portable radio.

Yeah, the former KWCR's transmitter is now close to the Idaho border and couldn't even get close to you Ken. You're in Midvale, right? KPGR used to be carried by the 96.7 translator when it was in Salt Lake and I think I was able to pick it up in my car in Salt Lake as well. It's a high school station, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was on autopilot right now. The lack of a legal ID is a concern though.

I'll check again in a bit. Stayed up late last night, so I'm charging batteries....the big radio battery is a little slow. I didn't really notice anything on 88.1 until I started playing with one of the FM Notch filters I bought from the TeleRadio News guys in the UK. That made it stand out next to KCPW. I wonder if there's any DX hiding under 88.3?

I heard a strong signal in several neighborhoods in Murray, but not sure if they were all the same programming. I finally heard an "XM" satellite ID at home. I was able to get a very weak 89.5 KUSR out of Logan.

"Kwacker" (KWCR, now KNKL Tremonton) is located over at the old WTCI microwave site just off the Short Divide road southwest of Clarkston. KUSU's transmitter site is 3/4's of a mile south of that on the ridge line. KUSR is only 820 watts ERP off the tower on the east side of the USU campus (190 feet directly over my head).

There is a translator for KPCW Park City on Lewis Peak west of Coalville that can sometimes be heard in the valley. It is directional towards Kamas and Coalville but I have occasionally heard it.

That may be one of the signals that I hear while driving around Murray. There is often a female voice, usually doing PSA's and Community Calendar sorts of announcements.

I think that nearly everyone has a fairly strong transmitter on 88.1. Probably not all are Part 15 Compliant. Seems like it's different programming every few blocks.
