I guess the reason that the 92.1 FM translator on Little Farnsworth is carrying a very weak, distorted version of AirOne is because they can't get an over-the-air signal from 50 KW KALL 700. I'll assume they take an OTA feed. I'll assume that K209CJ is on the same site, but running only 15 watts.
I wonder if the AM receive antenna is blown up (sounds like electrical arcing in the background). Maybe a couple of #31 or #43 ferrites on the audio and power cables might also help get AirOne out of the translator.

K209CJ currently has a license for 10 watts with a CP for 15 from slightly different coordinates, though that might be just rounding. K209CJ and K221GK are both at the same site. The FCC filing says that K221GK is fed by microwave. so maybe that failed.
It's worth noting that K221GK should be eligible to change its primary station away from KALL this July. It's still owned by Sanpete County Broadcasting. There's still no mention if it on the ESPN 700 website that I can find.

FM translators for AM stations do NOT pick up the AM signals over the air. FM translators for AM stations are fed by mcirowave STL's or internet, like Barix or comrex boxes

Is there a law that says they can't take an OTA feed? Not every place has access to reliable internet, or wants the expense of a microwave.

They were working yesterday, so I figured that they must read these forums. Unfortunately, they are down again.
If they are using something like those unlicensed links, I wonder if it's dish is "snowed-in"? I'd think that, if everything up there is on the same network and it's all down, lots of customers would be screaming.

I'm pretty sure a translator could take an OTA feed off AM if they wanted to, but then it wouldn't sound any better than the AM. For a music station that would be pretty bad. For a simulcast of KALL, maybe not so much.

For a simulcast of KALL, maybe not so much. A good receiver and proper antenna can provide remarkably good sounding audio from an AM/MW station. And, if relaying from the HD Radio feed, it can be even better (and in stereo, too). Didn't KALL-700 broadcast in HD for a while?

AFAIK AM stations have been limited by law to an analog frequency response of 10 kHz for many years. Digital is a good point, though with live sports that would be a problem to do now because of the digital delay.

Back in the early 1980's when 700 was known as KFAM and broadcast an easy listening format, the station did broadcast in AM stereo for awhile. As far as I know, the only AM stations in Salt Lake City that have broadcast in HD are KSL, KUTR, and the now defunct KWDZ. KUTR turned off their HD signal sometime after Bonneville sold the station in 2008. I've owned HD radios since 2018, and I've never seen the HD indicator activated when I've tuned to 820. BTW, 1430 WION in Ionia, MI claims that their streaming feed comes from the Carver AM stereo/FM stereo tuner that's pictured at the top of their website. I'm not sure if the Carver feeds a signal to WION's FM translator also, but the AM signal is broadcast in C-QUAM AM stereo.
