I had never known that Channels 2, 4, and 5 all had their studios on Social Hall Avenue back in the day. Previously, I had known about only 4 and 5. So much crowded into such a small street.

Social Hall, in its day, was a major cruising spot. So much so, that the people there nicknamed it "Social Disease Avenue". Kids would drive up State Street and turn on to Social Hall, where they would hang out and pick up friends. They would then make a right on to 200 East, drive and visit for a few blocks, then start again. The City put up signs on State, saying it was illegal to turn right on to Social Hall after 6 PM. The teens made it a game, turning, getting ticketed, driving the loop and getting ticketed again. Eventually, one of the parents sued the City, saying the signs were about 6 inches too high, so the children "could not have known it was illegal" (even with their glove box full of tickets), so the cases were dismissed, and the nightly parade continued. Now, you may see huge "No Cruising Zone" signs around downtown. They are a result of that. So big, even a spoiled teen would have trouble missing them 😜.

How many TV and radio folks consumed how many burgers at Fred's on Social Hall Avenue, next to KCPX? Remember Denny, who ran it and did most of the cooking? I guess he lost a lot of business when KSL finally moved out, and we had Crownburger across the street on 300 W at South Temple. Triad then built Crownburger a new joint a block north, to make room for what eventually became a steel beam yard.
