Thought I'd ask here first, before I wake up my friend in Atlanta....
I just was cleaning up some stuff, and took a look at a pair of Heathkit Active Audio Filters that I built in 1989. They have/had feet on the bottom, made of natural rubber. One unit, which has been sitting on the shelf for 10-15 years had rubber rot, that had softened the rubber. The other, which has been in a cardboard box for about the same time, actually had the feet melted, and liquid rubber was running off the metal case (still wet).
What, in Midvale, would do that? I'm surrounded by roads and freeways here. Many items that are made of rubber seem to rot in less than a year. Is it sulfur that does it? I remember something about "Vulcanizing" tires (with chlorine or sulphur?). Is this why condoms don't work here?

This is way beyond anything I know of, but those kinds of issues sound serious. You might want to talk to someone at the EPA. Condoms failing in particular seems very strange. The packaging is supposed to be airtight, I thought. Otherwise they dry out.
