There were quite a few pop, soul, and rock & roll instrumental hits on the charts in the early to mid 1960's that would probably fit into the KOOL 105.5 playlist. Just off the top of my head, there's "Soulful Strut" by Young Holt Unlimited, "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris, "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures, and "Pipeline" by the Chantays. The 1970's had its fair share of instrumental hits as well, like "A Fifth of Beethoven" and Van McCoy's "The Hustle". I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them right now.

"Seasons" by Charles Fox, "Music Box Dancer" by Frank Mills, "Peter Piper" by Frank Mills; "Joy" by Apollo 100, and various tv themes by Mike Post were what came immediately to my mind. Stingray has a stream just for instrumental hits of the 60s and 70s. "... a suave collection of instrumental radio hits of the ‘60s and ‘70s that will make everything you do a little fancier." webplayer.stingray.com/en/play/channel-info/description?channel-id=VIB_N0813

And who can forget "Hocus Pocus" by the Dutch band Focus? It was probably the only Top 10 instrumental hit of the 1970's (1973) to feature yodeling and a flute, besides some killer guitar playing! youtu.be/MV0F_XiR48Q

I was e-mailed today and invited to another round of music survey -- this time with the prize being $500 instead of a trip to Vegas (which is a much better prize IMHO). I am not sure if this survey was customized for me but there was a lot more in it that I really liked (as opposed to just okay) -- more instrumental, for example. Perhaps the program director at Broadway Media is taking your suggestion to play more instrumental hits on KOOL 105.5 seriously. I was listening to the station early (before 8 AM) this morning, and I was stunned to hear "Theme From A Summer Place" by Percy Faith! Wow, talk about a real oldie! That instrumental is even older than I am, and I'm almost 60. I have noticed that KOOL 105.5 is playing a bigger variety of songs recently. In fact, lately they've been sounding like a more uptempo version of the "America's Best Music" format which used to air on KLO-AM 1430.

Amanuensis, your post explains one of the biggest problems with commercial radio: They like to play it safe, and usually stick with playing songs that will cause the fewest number of listeners to tune out. For most stations, that means playing the hits. I think it's part of the reason why the same old Christmas songs are played on the radio every holiday season, rather than some of the new music you mentioned in the thread about Christmas flips. Even when a station tries to appeal to the widest possible audience, there's going to be a certain percentage of people who won't like the way a station is programmed. I was chatting online last night with my friend who's the program director for an NPR station in a small city in Northwest Alaska, and he was flamed in a broadcasters group recently for saying that his radio station wasn't going to flip to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. My friend's response to the naysayers was that he knows what his listeners want, and his job is to program the station accordingly. What works best for one radio station doesn't always work best for every station. As for KOOL 105.5, I did hear several songs played this weekend that I haven't heard on the radio for awhile. Besides the aforementioned Commander Cody song, I also heard a Brothers Johnson song, and "Too Hot To Handle" by Heatwave. I also noticed that KOOL played several older rock songs from the late 1950's and early 1960's during the "Wow Weekend" that they don't normally play. I guess what you heard on KOOL 105.5 this weekend depends on when you tuned in, and how long you listened for.
The problem is, outside of radio geeks, people wanna hear whats familiar ....the minute you play a lesser known stiff.. listeners will complain.... stick to the hits, especially in a large market.
