Usual Listening Area: east Murray

I don't know when this started but 99.9 is much stronger here in Murray than it was a week or 2 ago when I last tried to listen. Wow! Much stronger!

I wonder if the move to the Wells Fargo building has happened that was talked about in the pirate station thread?

That might be. The CP was issued about a month ago. That puts 3 "low powered" stations within about 5 blocks of each other, with all three antennas at nearly the same height. Anybody done an intermod check on them in the last few days?

Unfortunately, KUAA-LP isn't audible in Ogden. 99.9 is dominated by KSVN's FM translator in Northern Utah.

This is actually a great real world example of the importance of height for FM. Their power level couldn't go any higher than the 100 watts effective radiated power they had before, but with the additional height it can get out better.

I know I'm biased, but I'm a little doubtful it's a change of height alone, especially just to a higher rooftop. That slight of a change is not generally enough to explain why I'm now getting interference from them in northern Utah County when I'm 5 miles from my transmitter and 40 miles from theirs. If I keep seeing interference I may have to run some measurements.

Out of the three stations on 99.9, I'd say the Goat is the best, so why don't we all pool our money together and buy KUAA and KSVN and its transmitter in Ogden and just simulcast the Goat on all of them. 730 gets in to some of Salt Lake pretty well too so it would be 1580 ,AND 730 AM and 99.9 FM, Utah's Goat. You'd have to turn KUAA into a commercial station. Can LPs be commercial or are they all noncoms? If someone had more money than brains, could what I'm proposing be done legally? Then if one or more of the three was putting out too much power it wouldn't matter because they'd all be simulcasting. I realize I'm being completely unrealistic here but those of you who know about how the FCC and laws and all that work, I'm just curious if it could be done.

I'd now have a listenable signal from KUAA if it wasn't for interference from the 🐐. [grin]
Seriously though, KUAA is coming in much stronger now than it was here in West Jordan. But I'd rather get my GOAT.

i'm curious what measurement data would show right now. I say run them. Also, i don't venture in to Utah county much, so don't know about KQMB, but K244DH was carrying the Goat programming last night. Is that still a placeholder? It'd been quite a while since i checked previously, can't remember when for sure.

You guys are all too kind, thank you. Oldiesfunhouse, I wish we could do that. Most of it would be possible but KUAA couldn't be taken commercial. And there's actually a CP for another translator on 99.9 for Bluffdale we'd have to pick up as well. Alas. Amanuensis, I'm betting the translator in Bluffdale will cause you more grief sadly. It is the downside of how the FCC really declared open season for translators. Drpepper, we just put K244DH back on after a comedy of problems and are temporarily simulcasting but will be flipping at the beginning of next week

Just came from downtown. Looks like the old KCPW radomes are gone. Something else is there, but I didn't have a telescope, to see if it's a naked antenna or just old hardware. They'd be a lot higher up now, and far above the clutter level. That would make a difference in range.

Frank, you know how much I like and respect you, but I agree with Ken. The change in height isn't small. They went from 12 meters (about 39 feet) above ground to 133 meters (about 436 feet) above ground. If you look at the predicted coverage area change at fccdata.org/?call=kuaa you can see the difference it makes and I don't think that even considers the buildings that the signal would have to pass through to get from Salt Lake to Utah County.. That's simply based on the math. On the other hand it's certainly possible that they are running over power too and if there is any question about that it would make sense to do some measurements.
