I'm not at all surprised. With Cumulus' heavy debt load, it only makes sense for them to sell the license if they have a viable offer. Heck, they sold the license for a 1 KW graveyard station for $55 K, so a license for a 5 KW unlimited AM station should be worth at least $75-$100 K. With the FM band as crowded as it is in the Salt Lake metro it's pretty hard to get a license for a full power FM, and being on AM will give the buyer the opportunity to rebroadcast the AM signal on an FM translator. I just hope that whoever is buying the KFNZ license doesn't put another cookie cutter AM format like news/talk, sports, or another Spanish language station on 1320. While I'd love to see some of the former KDYL jocks like Danny Kramer, Steve Carlson, and JC Hackett resurrect Real Oldies on the Salt Lake AM dial, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

Apparently it was only a flesh wound.
What I personally found most interesting is that Cumulus apparently did file (by paper I guess?) to delete the station but it was someone else proactively contacting them that caused them to reconsider. That's not how it's supposed to work. That tells me that Cumulus apparently made no effort at all to see if anyone was interested in the station before throwing in the towel. How do you run a business like that?

If nothing else, Cumulus' decision to delete the KFNZ license without even putting it on the market is a good explanation for why the company is bleeding red ink. It just didn't make sense that they would go to the effort to keep 1230 on the air and licensed, and as you said throw in the towel with 1320 before even seeing if anyone was interested. Lame! UPDATE: Here's an article about the alleged pending sale of the KFNZ license. Apparently the author didn't get the memo that Cumulus sold KADH 1230 (ex-KRUZ and KRRF) about a month ago: www.insideradio.com/free/mystery-buyer-set-to-purchase-legacy-cumulus-am/article_0ceb09c0-15d6-11e7-a73e-a3dfe95afe4e.html

I definitely recognize those names, though exactly from where I can't recall. This information answers one question but raises another. What will the format be? Kona/Michael does have experience with a sports format, though that's just one of many formats he uses. A long shot possibility might be taking over a translator and using the AM as a nominal primary. I guess we'll just have to wait.
Another fact I find very interesting is the $100,000 purchase price. That's confirmed in the contract filing with the FCC. That's dirt cheap. I'm thinking that confirms the turning in the license wasn't a bluff. I really don't understand Cumulus.
(And yes, not being able to edit posts more than a little while after you post them is deliberate. It was previously allowed due to a technical issue that has been fixed.)

The formats on the Kona Coast stations run the gamut, from sports to Hawaiian music to Christian. I don't see the wisdom in putting another sports format on 1320 where KFNZ faltered. Even without sports programming on 1230/1320, there's still KALL and KZNS, plus BYU sports on KSL and Weber State sports on KLO. If it were me, I'd go with a format hole that needs filling in this market like pre-Beatles oldies, adult standards, or even comedy. The last thing we need is another sports, talk, or Spanish language station on AM.
