KTKK (630 AM) has been off the air for at least two days now, and I'm not sure why. There's nothing on either the station's Facebook page or the KTALK radio home page to indicate why KTKK is off the air; and there's nothing new, e.g. a silent application, posted for the station on the FCC's database to indicate they've gone silent. Of course, it could be that KTKK has applied to go silent and the application hasn't yet been posted on the FCC's web site due to Monday being a federal holiday. My guess is they're having some sort of transmitter problems related to this weekend's snow storm, since I didn't notice KTKK being off air before Saturday. The station's audio feed is still up and running on their home page <http://ktalkmedia.com/ktalk-radio/> for those who care. Also, is there someone in the Salt Lake area that can check 1510 to see if KLLB is still on the air? I know that KTKK shares a tower with KLLB, so I'd be interested to know if both stations are off the air. I can't hear KLLB in Ogden because I'm only about a mile from KOGN on 1490, and the adjacent channel interference on AM swamps every frequency + or - 30 kHz either side of 1490.

There's a strong carrier on 1510, but no modulation at the moment. Interestingly, I'm listening to KHOW Denver on 630.
(Edit:) KLLB is on now with regular programming. I guess they're a daytime-only station. KTKK Is still dead.

As of 12:45 PM today KTKK is back on the air. I noticed that the station's signal sounds cleaner and less muffled than it has previously, so it could be the engineer(s) were working on the transmitter over the Christmas holiday.

So many snarky remarks, but no I'm going to be nice to KTKK. As for KLLB, they have authorization for 10kw daytime and 1kw critical hours. December is the worst due to having the most nighttime. Sunrise in December is calculated at 7:45AM and sunset is at 5PM. The lower power (in this case 1kw) would be during the critical hours which is defined as sunrise to two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset to sunset. In other words, they'd only be at full power from 9:45AM to 3PM.

Funny you should mention snarky remarks about KTKK, CA. I was listening to the station for a few minutes this morning, and one of the callers was discussing the station being off the air with the in-studio host. The host suggested that perhaps a vacuum tube in the transmitter had gone bad, while the KTKK caller said he thought someone had managed to shut down the transmitter in some "clandestine, nefarious way". You wouldn't hear a comment like that on any other local radio station besides KTKK. By the way, someone at KTKK should update the station's schedule. Jim Kirkwood passed away in November, and as most of us know Mills Crenshaw died about a week ago. Both of their shows are still presently listed on the station's schedule.

As of 2:30 PM Sunday, KTKK is off the air again. Apparently the clandestine, nefarious forces which previously shut down the station's transmitter don't even get New Year's Day off.

Station is back on the air since Monday, but who knows for how long. I think the issues with KTKK's transmitter are more serious than a bad vacuum tube or two.

Transmitters need maintenance. Any good engineer will tell you that. Weekends are going to have lower ratings and holiday weekends are going to be even lower. Given the evidence I'd be willing to bet that this was planned.

You're probably right, CA, but if it was scheduled maintenance I would think KTKK might have posted an announcement on their main page or the station's Facebook page. But as you mentioned, there were probably very few listeners anyway, so management likely figured "why bother"?

Maybe they did not make an announcement to see if anyone noticed that they were off the air. "If a tree falls in a forest ..."

Maybe they did not make an announcement to see if anyone noticed that they were off the air. "If a tree falls in a forest ..." At least one listener noticed: when I was listening to KTKK for a few minutes last Wednesday, the in-studio host was discussing the station being off air for a few days, and the caller made a comment about some "clandestine, nefarious forces" shutting down KTKK. I was totally surprised that the caller didn't tell the host that he thought aliens had sabotaged the station. I would have listened longer, but I was almost on my kitchen floor rolling with laughter. 'Nuff said!
