KLGN (1390 AM/103.3 FM) flipped to all Christmas music 24/7 at Noon today. As far as I know, it's the only station along the Wasatch Front that's flipped so far: I checked KSFI 100.3 and KBZN 97.9 a few minutes ago, and they're still airing their regular formats. I'm predicting that KSFI will be the next station to jump on the jingle bell train--anyone else want to take a guess?

That seems like a logical guess. The "December" survey already started last Thursday and doesn't wrap until November 30 but I would assume that KSFI would start on a Thursday or Friday in the next few weeks to get the maximum lift to the December ratings period. The Frandsens eastern Idaho station hasn't flipped (Don't know if it will) or KLCE, but both have Christmas 24/7 online streams available at their websites.

I thought that KSFI was running a promotion to guess the day and hour that they will flip, with the winner getting $500. But I don't see that now on their website. Are they no longer taking entries? Or did they cancel it because of a leak?

I'm not sure about KSFI, but KLGN has been running a contest for a few days on their web site to guess the first Christmas song the station would play once they flipped at Noon today. However, the prize is dinner for two and tickets to a holiday performance at the Ellen Eccles Theatre. KSFI's web site does mention something about a countdown to the holidays, but I'm not sure if that's the contest you're thinking of.

Or did they cancel it because of a leak? It is flipper 6 on their website, but when you try to mouse over it, the page does behave strangely. I think they did this last year and it has a sponsor so I think the contest is on. The 17th is the Thursday before Thanksgiving, so that is a likely possibility.

I was actually surprised that 103.1 flipped to a new format so close to the only time of the year that it actually did well in the ratings. We'll see if the gamble pays off.
It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that 100.3 is going to flip. The only question is when. The hanging question is who else is going to challenge them. I don't think it will be Now 97.9. That's too much of a cash cow and is keeping the entire cluster afloat. B98.7 seems like a pretty good bet. It works with their format and they've done it before. One interesting possibility might be 107.9 trying to get some attention.

Maybe KSFI will surprise us all and not flip until very late in the season. I remember one year around 1985 when it didn't completely flip until about four days before Christmas. That year they published an ad in the newspaper announcing the flip ahead of time and listing therein each song they would play and when. They called it The FM 100 Hours of Christmas.

I've noticed that the local stations have been waiting longer to flip to all Christmas music the past 3-4 years, and I'm guessing it has something to do with the backlash from KOSY 106.5 and KSFI switching at Midnight on October 31st several years ago. When I was growing up in Minneapolis, the local beautiful music station (WAYL 93.7, now 93X) didn't flip to all Christmas until Noon on Christmas Eve, and it was called "the beautiful WAYL's 36 hours of Christmas music." Of course, that was during the 1970's, when stores waited until after Thanksgiving to put out their Christmas items.

FM100(.3) flipped this morning, 11/17. I think this is the latest in the season KSFI has waited to flip to all Christmas music, at least in the past 5-10 years. Anyone remember the station waiting until later than a week before Thanksgiving to make the switch?

FM100(.3) flipped this morning, 11/17. The switch happened at about 8:10. A few minutes before then, they were doing their usual morning show and playing their usual format. I switched away briefly and when I came back, Brian Wilson was doing We Wish You A Merry Christmas. So I assume that was the first song after the flip. They could have been joking, or not, but they said they were waiting to switch until the first snowy morning.

Somehow appropriate that FM100(.3) flipped the same day the Wasatch got it's first taste of snow. Planned? Maybe, but I doubt it. One week before Thanksgiving seems like a reasonable time.

Forgive me for sounding cynical, but I'm not buying KSFI's "first snowy morning" reason for waiting so long to flip this year. I'm thinking it was more the result of listener backlash than anything else. After all, wasn't it just 4 or 5 years ago that KSFI flipped to all Christmas at Midnight on October 31st along with the radio station formerly known as KOSY-FM (106.5)? Something is up when an AM station (with an FM translator) in Logan beats KSFI to the switch by almost two weeks!
