As I was driving on Legacy Parkway the last couple of weekends I noted that ESPN700's 5-tower array west of Bountiful (can't call it KALL, but that's another story and another thread) has more extinguished lights than lit ones. In fact, one tower is completely dark, the other four have operating beacons but a variety and range of burned out double obstruction lights. As close to both SLC and BTF as that site is, you'd think that there'd be a little more diligence in keeping things lit at night.....but that's just my radio engineer's paranoia speaking!

Very true, but it's not like you can just ask the janitor to climb a ladder and fix the lights. The really important part is to make sure that if something that's required and expected is not working to let the FAA know so they can publish a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) and alert everyone. There doesn't seem to be any notice for the 700 site listed, though there are several others in the area. I'd have to take a look at what the actual legal requirements for lighting those towers are and what would need to be reported to know how big a problem it is. Hopefully there isn't one.

Oh I know all about relamping towers and 47 CFR part 17.....and I hire a fellow who is better looking than I am to handle the job! I'm supposing the feeling might be that since it is a fairly compact array, if one stays clear of the four towers you can "see", then you'd be clear of the one that you can't yet being so close to an major international airport, every effort would be made to maintain the high level of upkeep that seems to have been the case in the past. I've been impressed with how well that array's lighting has been maintained over the years but to see so many extinguished bulbs all of a sudden is surprising.

FWIW, I took this picture almost 10 years ago (2008). upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0c/KALLtowers.jpgThe door to one of the transmitter buildings has the old KWLW calls still on it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KALL#/media/File:KALLdoor.jpgAlso, I haven't been active here in a looongggg time. I was reading back on some of my old posts, and smacking my head at stuff I had typed. I'm no longer in Utah, or Wyoming for that matter (Minnesota now) but still look back on it from time to time. Radio here is a lot different than out west. More live personalities here, just harder to find a job in radio.

Radio here is a lot different than out west. More live personalities here, just harder to find a job in radio. Enjoy your time in the "Great White North". I was born and reared in Minnesota and grew up during the glory days of KDWB (630 AM) and WDGY (1130 AM), and I still have many fond memories of listening to the radio during those youthful years. I think the fact that I grew up with AM radio is one of the reasons why I still prefer listening to AM in 2016--that and the fact that I enjoy AM DX'ing. Things have sure changed in Twin Cities radio since I left Minnesota in 1987. WDGY is now an oldies station on 740 AM, and 630 AM (former home of KDWB) is now Spanish-language WREY, "Radio Rey." One thing hasn't changed, though: WCCO is still on 830 after all these years; in fact, I was listening to "'CCO" this past weekend on skywave here in Ogden, and the signal was pretty darn good!

I could hear 'CCO in Salt Lake when I was there. From here I've heard KSL, KXOL (highest power pirate ever), and one that surprised the hell out of me, KSUB 590 from Cedar City. I miss SLC. Would love to get back to the market if there are radio or TV jobs available.

I suppose that no one has filed a complaint, or the FCC just doesn't care.
