It's actually Katz Broadcasting that owns Laff/Grit/Escape. ABC and Scripps are just signing on to carry it.
I think it's a good idea. Comedy Central has done well on cable, so why not try a similar service on broadcast? The question would be where to put it here. As you said, KJZZ doesn't have anything other than their main programming. I don't think they even have any other data services on their signal and their main it only at 720p. They could definitely fit something else there. KUTV might be able to squeeze another stream in, but it would probably mean degrading 2 or all 3 of the streams. Then there are the lesser players as well. KPNZ only has 1 stream running like KJZZ, so they could. Then there is the pair of 25/39 (they're still simulcasting aren't they?), who are at 480i on a single stream. 25/39 are both low power, so that might not be as desirable but it could work. KSTU has a 720p and a 480i so I think that could work too.
Another good question is, what other diginets are planned and are those worth waiting for?
