From what I can tell, the sale of KSTU and many other Local TV stations to Tribune has been approved.
Following up on what Ken was saying in the latest 1060 thread, historically I was impressed with Tribune TV's news operations in New York. I haven't seen any of their newscasts in many years, so I don't know if it's still as good as it was then but I'm hopeful. We can always use another solid news operation. The current Fox13 news isn't bad, but isn't outstanding either in my opinion. Let's see where this goes.

I remember reading an article several years ago in which it was said that KSTU wanted to become a major news player in the area. I've been quite impressed for the past while that they're often the first to report major stories (in depth reporting, not just a mention of the story) and, far more often than not, the first to tweet about an event.

Hoping you're right CA. I can personally vouch that "Q13" (KCPQ/KZJO) in Seattle is a great station with a lot of news content, not just fluff. On the other hand, Tribune runs "CW32" in Portland as bare boned as possible, with no local news presence. They contract with the local NBC affiliate instead for 1/2 hour a day, 7 days a week.

That CW is better than CW30 here, which I don't think does more than a whopping 9 minutes of local news a day.
I think whether the Tribune stations do a lot of local content or not depends on many factors. A CW station is probably running on a shoestring budget anyway. The network isn't a major draw. A Fox affiliate like KCPQ or KSTU is going to have a lot more resources and ratings. That gives them more return on the investment. There's no guarantee though. On the other hand, WPIX is a CW O&O, but they've been a very strong local station for decades.
It could go either way, but I want to remain optimistic.
