I remember having the same question about the simulcast of KUSU & KUSR. On paper KUSR looks unnecessary. There was a discussion about it and I was told that it doesn't really work that way in the real world. I tend to think that blocking the Salt Lake signals is a more likely answer, but there are multiple possibilities. Fortunately there are remedies available, since translators are a secondary service. It just takes one complaint and the translator goes away.

Well the difference between KUSU & KUSR is that they aren't blatantly blocking out a competing signal. KUSR is on a blank non-commercial channel. If Cache Valley media group wasn't trying to block out stations on purpose, then a good question is..why do they block out SLC stations with a translator that plays the same format as the SLC station they are blocking out? (Example: Adult contemp. KBLQ Q92.9 translator on the dial 97.9,blocks out Now 97.9) It's a way of forcing people to listen to their CVMG stations. As for shutting down a translator, Is it really that easy? Many have filed complaints and these translators are still on air blocking these signals.

EMF (K-Love/Air1) is getting into the act now too. They're applying for 94.1 at Smithfield pointing northwest. This is more limited than a similar application they filed back in 2003. It would rebroadcast KNKL (K-Love).

Now 97.9 is back in Logan, has been for the past few weeks! Looks like KBZN may have stepped in and defended their signal in Logan and got the translator shut off?

In a matter of speaking, yes. You can read their notification to the FCC here: licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/prefill_and_display.pl?Application_id=1570478&Service=FX&Form_id=910&Facility_id=144800The relevant part says "K250AV HAS GONE SILENT AFTER RECEIVING COMPLAINTS OF INTERFERENCE TO STATION KBZN(FM), OGDEN, UTAH. THE STATION WAS TAKEN SILENT ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2013 AFTER DISCUSSIONS WITH THE PRINCIPAL OF THE LICENSEE OF KBZN. WHILE SUN VALLEY RADIO, INC. DOES NOT CONCEDE THAT INTERFERENCE TO KBZN FROM OPERATIONS OF K250AV IN FACT EXISTS, IT IS EVALUATING THESE CLAIMS AND LOOKING AT ENGINEERING ALTERNATIVES TO ELIMINATE ANY CLAIMS OF INTERFERENCE. IN THE INTERIM, RATHER THAN BURDENING THE COMMISSION WITH A POTENTIAL COMPLAINT ABOUT THE CLAIMED INTERFERENCE, SUN VALLEY HAS DECIDED TO TAKE THE STATION SILENT. SUN VALLEY HOPES TO TAKE STEPS TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS ABOUT THE CLAIMED INTERFERENCE SHORTLY. " Oh, and there's an application for 93.3 in Logan pending as well. The contact person for that is Morgan Skinner. I think i saw an app for 93.1 in there somewhere as well.
