99.1 Provo (translator K256AE) has broken with the classic rock that was duplicating the new Rock 106.5 and is now an alternative outlet. According to RadioInsight the shift happened this morning and the source is from Clear Channel's Premium Choice internet service. Their website is www.project991.com

I agree its okay to take risks, but how many formats can we put on that station before people just stop listening, or is it too late?

People have a very short memory. They don't care what was on the station before. They care what's there now and whether they like it.

Maybe the real issue is, do they have a good signal? Other than that, the programming would be all that matters. (Kinda like when people build a new restaurant in the same place where they've all failed before. That indicates a bad location, not necessarily bad food.)

The way I see it
Clear Channel had a voice over guy make some basic station ID's 99.1 and 106.5 Showed the local talent the door. Pull a national feed cookie cutter format off a satellite and then wam bam the guy who took this to the General Manager for a cost saving idea looks like a genius and probably got a closer parking stall.
Look radio is changing so much anyways most cars now come with SiriusXM and Iheart and Tunein, Pandora, USB Ports and ect.. You can get any station or format on smartphones with a free download you can get any format you want if you have cable or satellite. Internet stations ect..
But the complaint is I want LOCAL! You're always going to have the KSL's the local sports and talk stations and the good ole boys like KSOP and KBYU and so on.
The future is now and everyone's a DJ and can play there own format with Ipods or MP3's and Internet. So I can see more stations going the way of Clear Channels IHeart everything formats because it's cheap and the savings are HUGE! And you can even turn the lights off in the studios..

If you want to talk about things like signal strength, then you have to get into things like planned obsolescence too. See Docket 02-290, which (among other things) moves KUDE to 99.1 and tosses the translators things out onto the front lawn. The FCC hasn't been enforcing their rulings (see also Docket 05-243) so who knows when that will happen, but it's pending. To make things worse, I don't think there's anywhere for a displacement to go. In the end I think the only place the format on 99.1, regardless of what they had flipped it to, could go is a promotion to a full power station.
I agree with the sentiment of what DSPete said, but there is one thing I think is a red herring. Mobile streaming of media is not scalable. It's definitely workable on wired internet with little problem. WiFi is a little trickier, but that's got its own issues. Mobile 3G/4G/5G/OhG/whateverG is not a sustainable source. If any significant fraction of radio listening moved to mobile streaming, the cell networks would be brought to their knees. It just won't work. Terrestrial radio is infinitely scalable and it's free. That gives it a huge advantage. Your right though. Crappy execution will drive people to look for other ways to get content. That can get painful in the wallet though.
