I've been pondering this for a while and I don't have a definite answer. Assuming KLO is carrying Weber State sports again this year, should they run the games on both AM & FM or should they split the simulcast? If you think they should split, which station carries the game and which carries regular programming?

If they were to split, I'd prefer the Weber State sports on AM only. I get a better signal on FM and prefer the talk shows. (And I graduated from Weber State.)
But I'll bet they just simulcast.

I can't imagine a good, solid reason to split the sports broadcasts from the regular talk stuff.
First, it's confusing. Why have different programming some of the time.
Second, well... it just doesn't make sense. More coverage, on FM and AM is just that... more coverage.

It makes sense if the two audiences are different. If the simulcast gets 20,000 people for the regular talk programming and 20,000 people who listen to the sports programming and 10,000 of those are not the same people, then splitting the simulcast could get a combined 30,000 people listening instead of 20,000 that you would with the simulcast staying in place.

I mentioned something a while back to some of the KSL-AM/FM folks, about doing a split feed occasionally, and was told that it can't be done due to the ratings system.

The way I understand it is that you have to follow what you tell Arbitron in the Station Information Profile. According to the SIP, KSL(AM) has added to it KSL(AM) HD, KSL-FM and KSL-FM HD. Those are all encoded separately but combined to make one number. If they got reported separately, you could combine them for the simulcast periods (which would be most of the time) and not for other times.
