I just got hold of the licensee. Their studios are in South Salt Lake (as of several years ago). He says they have the license, but the transmitter site was sold, and they have to vacate in about a month. He didn't know the feed was bad, and will drive over to check it out. Anybody know of a cheap piece of land around Ogden? Interesting. KDYL's studio used to be in South Salt Lake, but I believe they vacated the building they were in two or three years ago. I wonder if KOGN moved into the old KDYL studio. I think all the cheap land in Ogden vanished about 10 years ago. Real estate in Northern Utah is selling for insane prices, as it is in most of Utah. The site of the old Fred Meyer store at 202 12TH ST is still vacant, but that's hardly the ideal location for an AM radio tower. 😉 If they have to vacate the Gibson Avenue property and can't relocate their transmitter and tower within the radius allowed by the FCC to keep Ogden as their city of license, KOGN might have to apply to relocate their COL. I suppose there's a possibility that KOGN could diplex off of one of 1430's towers, but I have no idea how complicated that would be with 1490 being just 60 kHz away from 1430 KMES.

I'm too far away to know the Ogden real estate scene......but if I can remove a few things from the building saving them time and labor, then so be it.

I just checked 1490, and nothing has changed since your post three days ago. IMO, if the automation is beyond immediate repair, he might as well just shut down the transmitter to save on the electric bill and file an STA on Monday.

He said he was "seven blocks away". Maybe traffic is really bad in South Salt Lake 🙄. It sounds slightly different, so maybe it started and then stopped again?? I wonder if anyone monitors stations, any more.
(Just a thought.. Was the FCC wrong in eliminating the Main Studio Rule? At the very least, stations should have to list a "shoutdown" number in their FCC public files. It could just be a number for their local alarm company, who could relay the info to the appropriate station personnel.)

After nearly two weeks, the stuck/repeating audio on KOGN has FINALLY been fixed! Anyone want to make a bet on how long it will stay fixed? 😉
Mr. Kifuri's comments on another thread about KDYL's Continental 10 kW transmitter breaking down and negotiations with the station's advertisers begs the question: Do the KOGN advertisers know their commercials haven't been airing for the past two weeks, and is the station owner going to reduce their billing appropriately?

If I were a merchant buying time on a station I would be listening to the station at least every once in a while. Sure I'd want to make sure my ads were airing and airing correctly, but I'd also want to make sure that nothing else was going on at the station that could reflect negatively on me as an advertiser.
Someday I should tell some of my war stories about my time as editor/engineer for a the ad sales division of a cable company (not Comcast and not in Utah.) One of them would be about the owner of a group of car dealerships who bought time every night on CNN's Larry King Live (remember that?) for years on end. If his spots didn't air correctly you could bet we'd get a phone call the next day.
