Just when I thought digital radio was dead, I found 93.7, KKUT is now broadcasting 4 digital channels, more than any other northern Utah station. Current programming on this Sunday afternoon: KKUT HD1 “Sounds of Sunday” The Wolf HD2 “Sounds of Sunday” KLGL HD3 “Sounds of Sunday” Classic KMGR HD4 “The Goat, 1580 & 99.9” When I rotate the antenna on my Sangean HDR-16 properly, I get absolutely crystal clear signals from all 4 programs, here in east Murray. The stereo separation on “HD” channels is very obviously superior to stereo on analog FM. I can also pick up these stations on my little Sangean HDR-14. Now I’m curious to hear what they program on weekdays.

Yuck. Has to sound horrible running that many sub channels. I’m already pushing my limit and I just have and HD1 & HD2.

You only have so much bandwidth to share between them. Usually the practice is to allocate most of your bandwidth to HD1. I actually run my HD1 & HD2 around the same quality. I’m also running mine in extended hybrid mode to squeeze a little more quality out of it. You also have to add in metadata & artist experience (pictures) into that bandwidth equation. Good processing helps quite a bit as well.

There are so many things that flood my mind after reading this thread, but after a long weekend i am not feeling the focus/energy to write them all at the moment. But to be brief for now, christopherjohn, KSOP HD1&2 sound really good. Taking everything into consideration, pretty impressive imo. Terry, KLGL and KMGR run AC and SoftAC respectively IIRC. That's awesome KKUT is running in HD now. Excited about the radio happenings going on in the south part of the valley.

KKUT's HD4 would be the primary for 96.7 so I'm not sure how much the quality of that stream matters. It just needs to be there. Common practice around the country seems to be putting music on HD1 & HD2 and anything above that (typically only up to HD3) is talk which requires less bandwidth.

You only have so much bandwidth to share between them. So, a narrow bandwidth means less high audio frequency response? Is that it? If so, I don’t notice it. KKUT 93.7 HD4, “The Goat”, sounds better to me than on the 96.7 translator. Of course, as I said, my ears are old and may not notice any lack of high frequencies. I don’t know. Speaking of HD3, KUER 90.1 HD3 “Classical KUER” sounds excellent to me. It actually sounds better to me than KBYU-FM analog (maybe because of the superior stereo separation on digital signals).

KKUT HD1 - country music. I’m not a fan of current country. (I do like country oldies.) HD2 - KLGL Adult Contemporary, some familiar, too many unfamiliar. I couldn’t listen for long. I prefer 97.9. HD3 - KMGR - mellow older stuff. There’s nothing like it in SLC. I really like this one. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett type stuff. HD4 - KWLO mostly 60’s music. I spend time listening to this one too.

The HD3 channel sounds similar to the "America's Best Music" format of KLO 1430. Unfortunately, I'm too far north to receive anything on 93.7.

The HD3 channel is mostly older and definitely mellower than KLO. Hearing Nat “King” Cole right now!

Reason KUER HD3 sounds better is because of what's already been mentioned. HD1&2 don't need much bandwidth since both are talk formats.

They have some good processing/encoding on that HD3. Reason KUER HD3 sounds better is because of what's already been mentioned. HD1&2 don't need much bandwidth since both are talk formats.

The HD3 channel is mostly older and definitely mellower than KLO. Hearing Nat “King” Cole right now! KLO's playlist does include Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Dean Martin, as well as occasional hit instrumentals from the 1950's & 1960's. However, most of the ABM playlist consists of soft adult contemporary hits from the 1970's & 1980's.

We know that KKUT HD4 is the primary for 96.7 K244DH. I have to wonder if the other subchannels are going to be used as primaries for other translators. I can get 92.9 K225AP from up in Davis County for example. I can't check just now but is K225AP still running the main programming?
