Hello folks. Tonight, I was listening to KUMT and noticed they were broadcasting a BYU Womans Soccer game. However, I had BYU radio playing on the Serious XM app and noticed they were running their music program. I also found they were playing the same music program on the BUY radio app. Why were they not carrying the BUY Womans soccer game on BUY radio but they were broadcasting it on 107.9? Is this a rebroadcast? On another note. When ever there is a BUY football game. I noticed the music program that airs week day evenings airs on 107.9 during the BUY football game and ends when the locker room show is over. Then KUMT will simulcast with BYU Radio. Why is this?

I don't know about the soccer games but, as far as the football, the reason those aren't aired on KUMT is because KSL radio has the exclusive over the air rights to BYU football and men's basketball games so, when those are on, KUMT has to air something else. Interestingly, KSL was running their special election night coverage on what they call their x stream on the internet. That stream just simulcasts KSL's main signal most of the time, but they're able to cut in and do updates. BYU had a basketball game that night and so on the x stream they were cutting in and doing election updates. I remember one night, it was a major election night, they put the BYU game on KSFI, FM 100.3. (They really need new jingles over there. They have them singing FM 100 and they just hired a woman to sing point 3 over the top of it and to me it sounds dumb because you can still hear the "dred" of FM one hundred at the same time she's singing three. Sorry. Totally off topic but I've had that gripe for a while and needed to get it out to somebody. I'm probably the only person who cares.)b

OFH is right. The broadcast rights for sports is a huge business. Less so for radio but still very significant. Whoever pays for the rights can air specific events and those who don't can't, and internet rights are separate from broadcast rights. In this case it looks like women's soccer is carried online by the WCC Network and they don't need the competition. The FM100 part of this thread has been moved to a new thread. talkingutahradio.proboards.com/thread/1894/fm-100-point-3

Since its inception/re-launch in 2011, BYUR has regularly split its SiriusXM feed and web stream to accommodate sporting event broadcast rights. The NCAA basketball tournament is especially messy. I imagine FM adds a third ball to juggle.
