Moving the KBYU-FM callsign to 107.9 doesn't make any sense at all to me. There's nearly 4 decades of history there. You also have the problem of confusion. If someone says "KBYU radio" do they mean the new one or the old one? That's an even bigger deal for those outside the market who only know stations by callsign. (Take a look at the mess that went on for a year with Nielsen's reporting on 94.9 and 101.9) Even after all that you STILL have the original problem of either keeping the KUMT calls or finding new ones. Changing a heritage callsign while keeping the format just sounds like a solution in search of a problem. The station is staying put, the callsign should too.

I'm just wondering if any of you know when the flip will take place on 107.9 from The Mountain to BYU Radio. I guess KBYU TV Channel 11 discontinued its PBS affiliation on July 2. There had been discussion about KUMT flipping then but maybe the sale is still pending. Does anybody have any insight? Thank you. It's official now: According to KUMT's Facebook page, BYU Broadcasting takes over 107.9 on Monday morning, 09/17/2018. Quite frankly, I'm surprised (but happy nonetheless) that the switch didn't take place sooner. Their Facebook page also mentions that they're working on moving the programming to another FM frequency in the near future. You can like their page for updates. RIP Utah's Mountain . . . for now, anyway.

The transition from Utah's Mountain to BYU Radio came early. As of 4:00 PM Sunday, BYU Radio is on 107.9.

So much for airchecking the change. Did anyone happen to hear? I'm curious if there was any message or if the signal just dumped over. (I'm guessing the latter.)

The change to BYU Radio was preceded by a lengthy stretch of dead air followed by some test tones, then into BYU Radio. No fanfare and no sign off from the Mountain, but I think they pretty much covered the good-byes on their Facebook page.

FWIW: A post on the station's Facebook page earlier today indicates they have registered the domain name utahsmountain.org, so watch for a URL shift in the near future.

I worked at BYU Radio for a decade (my name isn't really Henry -- though I am the guy who did UTRadioGuide back in the day). One of my last assignments (before I quit, moved out of state, and switched careers) was to build a stunt format and a format change launch. I guess my boss wasn't able to get the bosses upstairs to approve it. Oh well. I've got it if anyone wants to hear it. (That said, it's kind of lame now, since it never actually aired)

What size is the file? If it's a reasonable size and there's nothing that would run afoul of copyright you can just upload it into this thread.

It seems like BYU Radio is including more classical music than they used to; I assume that was part of the plan from back when they were going to reformat 89.3. Short pieces are being used a lot to bridge the TOH to BBC news, whereas in the past BYU Radio would have used show promos or the Church's Homefront radio PSAs.
So far, no indications that BYU plans on changing the KUMT call sign. They do a respectable job of pronouncing the letters -- not like some stations stuck with a call sign they no longer want that read the letters and COL so fast that they beat the speed of the reading of terms and conditions of financing offers on radio spots for car dealers.

It seems like BYU Radio is including more classical music than they used to; I assume that was part of the plan from back when they were going to reformat 89.3. There was never any serious plan to add classical to BYU Radio's programming on 89.1. The press release mentioned it slightly, which got interpreted by the Deseret News that it would -- to a point where the bosses began to think, "well, maybe we should." Very likely had the 89.1 takeover happened, the Sunday morning classical music would have moved over to BYU Radio's lineup. But now that 89.1 is remaining classical, there is renewed focus to make new, fresh talk programming. Right now BYUR really only has one in-house Sunday show. I was on the team making those just before I left the station. The manager of the station is a serious pro from commercial radio. The Ad Council PSAs were a placeholder in 2011 which he really didn't care for. Those began to be phased out and replaced with promos in 2015. Now there's an effort to create an unending supply of fresh short-form programming to fill out hours. We seriously looked. I mean we considered anything. BYU-Idaho has KBYR and they want to keep it. KUYB (BYU backwards) was floated around, but it was kind of ugly. KYMT ("Y-Mountain") was an idea we had, but it's already in use in Las Vegas. There were like 8 ideas but none of them got anyone upstairs excited -- so I think KUMT is here for the foreseeable future (or at least that was the case when I left).

Thank you henry. First thing I have to ask as a geek and moderator; did you intentionally squish the MP3 so that it would fit when you uploaded it? It literally just squeaked in.
On to the real business. The following is just my opinion, for whatever that's worth. I like it. Very clever and nice editing. That said, I'm not surprised it wasn't used. BYU Radio is conservative to say the least. To me it doesn't really fit. I think that might have been what you were going for. That is, the first half would fit with the old Mountain format and then it segues to the new one. Still, it would mean that BYU was broadcasting (even for a minute) something that is not conservative. If I were in charge I would have run it, but that isn't saying much. Curious if others agree with that assessment or not.

I would say it felt to light hearted for what I feel BYU Radio's imaging is like. Henry that was really well done. It's a shame it didn't air.
