With the recent demise of KFNZ, the Jim Rome Show has been added to KLO's schedule from 10 AM-1 PM weekdays, replacing the Dennis Prager show. It seems kind of strange to me for a conservative "world class talk" station to add a sports talk program like Rome's to their line up, but maybe KLO is hoping to pick up some listeners from KFNZ that are die-hard Jim Rome fans. (Rome's web site still hasn't been updated and is showing KFNZ as the Salt Lake affiliate.) I'm wondering if the addition of Rome's show to KLO's weekday schedule is a precursor to a pending format change. Time will tell.
By the way, KFNZ still hasn't been deleted from the FCC's database. If Cumulus plans on turning in the station's license, they're certainly taking their own sweet time notifying Uncle Charlie.

Rome's show is a pretty big deal, so this would make sense.

What surprises me is that neither KALL nor KZNS picked up Rome's show after KFNZ went dark. IMHO, either one of those stations would be a better fit for Rome's program, but maybe 700 and 1280 didn't have any openings in their weekday schedule. Or maybe KLO is just desperate to pick up some ratings and beat KALL and KZNS to the punch. Whatever the scenario, KLO will have to advertise that they're the new affiliate in Salt Lake for Jim Rome, because most people wouldn't expect his show to be on KLO unless they discovered it during a random band scan. UPDATE: It appears that KLO mis-read their audience again. Right now the comments on the station's Facebook page are about 3 to 1 against Jim Rome and in favor of bringing Dennis Prager back to his former 10 AM-1 PM time slot. Can you say major screw-up?

The people who are in favor of it aren't going to say anything because they have what they want, assuming there are any Rome fans that even know about it. KLO hasn't been at the forefront of advertising what's on the station. The only ad campaign I remember seeing for them was for Ingraham and that was probably more than 10 years ago, and yes they have to change that. They aren't going to get any ratings if people don't even know what's there. Rome is a name at least some people will recognize. Prager not so much. The station isn't going anywhere so there's really not much of a downside and plenty of room for an upside. I think it's a good move, but we'll have to see how it plays out.

While I see your point, I still wouldn't be surprised if KLO dumps Rome's show after a month or two unless they publicize the show and build an audience. Merrill Cook's show only lasted a month before being cancelled, and Mills Crenshaw was off KLO and back at KTKK after a year. At the very least, KLO needs to advertise the new home of Jim Rome with a few UTA bus boards, perhaps on the routes that go to Vivint Arena and BYU games. That would be the target audience for Rome, and it can't cost all that much to run ads on UTA buses, can it? It does seem a little coincidental that KLO decided to start airing Rome's program at the height of March Madness. I hope they're successful in picking up some new listeners, but I have my doubts.

Now that you mention it, you could look at the timing the other way as being a little odd too. It seems strange that Cumulus would shut down a sports station right before The Madness, especially with their connection to CBS Sports Radio. (Who actually carries the games anyway?

According to Google, Westwood One is the network carrying the March Madness games. Their site lists 1280/97.5 KZNS as the local affiliate for the games.
