Thanks for the heads up from another 80's child that also enjoyed KJQ in its original incarnation! I noticed in reading the article that Cuzzin Brad, Chet Tapp, and Andrea from the original KJQ will be part of the on-air staff, so I wonder if this is Mike Summers (late of KUMT 107.9) newest project?

I expected a change to happen when KSQN resorted to the hail-mary of commercial-free weekends. But I am sad to see the format go. They had a good mix.

The biggest problem I had with Sunny was Delilah. I never could stand her. But she was on at night in a not as important daypart, so eh. I think Sunny was a good try. It was definitely better than staying as KLO-FM and I maintain it was the right call. Not the most successful format, but a nice effort. The old Sunny website is now redirecting to www.1031thewave.com as noted in the article. The logo they show is also on that website and it has the tagline "The Next Wave of New Wave". That was the tagline of kcqnutah.com too, so I agree and think this is a descendant of that. In a way this is a back to the future moment. Remember the new KJQ and later Jack-FM at 103.1 before Sunny and KLO-FM? Even when the station was on autopilot waiting to be sold it was doing as well or better than the current Sunny format. This makes a lot of sense to be, especially if they put some promotion behind it.

Wasatch Front, I am jealous that you can listen to this format over the air. I wish them all the best for at least a little tick up from current ratings. Funny that "KJQ" was on the full 103.1 for a little while, although most of its time was through the three frequencies (100.7/ 103.1/ whatever Utah County's was).
I don't know that this is really an appropriate combo with "Now 97.9" but obviously "Sunny" wasn't working out either. Out of curiosity, does Capital Broadcasting still have an office in Ogden for KLO? How do they sell? Most companies now have sellers offering the entire cluster as part of their strategy.
So far it sounds like the Clinton Mattress (something) and Odyssey Dance Theater decided to stay with the new format. I also heard a spot referencing the 'holiday season' for a local HVAC company.

So, I happen to have family in Idaho Falls and was curious about the "Thriller" dates there. Turns out that was LAST YEAR and the show is not returning. Either the production company or Capital Broadcasting's sales/traffic/production department have a problem. :-?

KLO no longer has an office in Ogden. They've relocated to the 257 Tower on 200 East in Salt Lake City. That's a shame, because I remember visiting to the station back in the early 90's shortly after I graduated from Weber State and meeting Len Allen. I had a friend who was also in the broadcasting program at Weber State that did news for KLO at the time, and she invited me to KLO when their studios were still located in what used to be the David Eccles Building. Presently, most of KLO's commercials are for The Advocates law office, a garden center, Hertz Car Sales, America First, and some really dumb ads for Shamrock Plumbing. (sorry KLO, but I think the Shamrock ads need to go.)

The revival of KJQ back in 2001 was on 100.7 back when it was a Brigham City allocation, 103.1 which was a translator on Ensign Peak before the Humpy rimshot signed on and a 100.7 translator in Utah County. The Utah County translator got nailed for illegally translating the 103.1 translator. That one was subsequently deleted and the 103.1 translator went off the air when the Humpy rimshot went on the air, though both had the same station so probably only radio geeks noticed. If Capitol is like most companies these days they didn't tell anyone ahead of time about the format change. The sponsors on there now would have bought the old Sunny station and the new Wave would be fulfilling the contract. Language about that was probably in the contract (or should have been.) I wouldn't read too much into that at this point. As far as an old promo, it sounds like somebody goofed somewhere. I had an incident when I was doing commercial work at a cable system (not locally) where a New Year's spot was still running at the END of January. I brought this up to the account manager who had that account and she didn't care and said to run it anyway. She wasn't there much longer.

I did a short stint board (bored) opping on KBZN in late 1990/early 1991 and they and KLO were still in the Eccles building in downtown Ogden. Wasn't a bad setup. The KLO studio was pretty neat....had a "wall of automation" with a Schaffer (sp?) automation system....the music was on reels. I remember standing in there watching Len and Mike on the air one morning...Len played "Time and Tide" by Basia.....he pronounced it "buh-SEE-uh". LOL! They still had the big old RCA rotary pot board in there. Len was pretty cool, though. Always nice to talk to old pros and he was definitely one of 'em.....just not up to date on modern-day music and artists and they were basically full-service with Light AC music then. They had a little rotary pot board in the production room - I remember getting assigned a few things to cart up from reel in there. KBZN was nicer with a slider pot board and Denon CD-Cart players for the music. Steve Braegger and Don Hill would actually do live shifts on KBZN...I just board-opped the morning show....following the log playing music and spots with liners in between. John Webb was still the big guy then. He was kinda funny. No not "ha-ha" funny. I also got to see their studios in the Aerospace Center at 40th and Harrison in Ogden a few years later. A friend and I popped in to visit one day. Arnie Wheeler was on the air. I guess they had gotten rid of the old RCA board and it looked like the little rotary pot board from the production room was being used as the main board. That was some time later in the 90s. And since were flopping off-topic all over the place, I am also a KWCR alumnus. You must have worked there right after I left, David. I was there in I think 1989 and 1990. I was instrumental in the big format change when they changed from Rock (Weber State's 88) to Dance (88.1 - the Beat). Gary Toyn was station manager at the time. I remember we brought in Hi-Fi stereo VCR's.....one in the production room and one in the main studio. It was a requirement for all of us to get a VHS tape and record (audio track only) a 6-hour show since on SLP a videotape could hold 6 hours. It was Hi-Fi stereo so the quality was great. Back then we still had plenty of albums but were starting to build a CD collection too. Anyways....so like overnights or if someone couldn't cover a shift, you'd pop in someone's tape and there ya go...you're covered for 6 hours. I don't think it was legal that we were doing that because as far as I know, we didn't have a walk-away system where you could legally leave the station un-manned. I want to say it was summer of 1990 that I left to take a job doing overnights at KRPN (WKRP) 107.9 in Roy. Getting back on topic, I think I will miss Sunny as well. I listened...I'm an AC guy. Honestly it seems like they couldn't decide who they wanted to be. They started out being light-AC....something no one else is doing. That's what my little station here in Evanston is. Then very soon after they morphed to more main-stream AC. They stayed there the longest and then recently a several months ago went BACK to light and easy stuff so back to soft AC. Then very recently...got rid of Jim Merkel (I am pretty sure that's who the imaging voice was for most of their run) and got new liners with a different voice....edits of the same jingles...got rid of the jocks. And now this. As far as Delilah....ugh...yeah count me in on that group that really can't bear to listen to her. I guess we'll see how long the new wave lasts. Again it's something no one else is doing so hopefully they can stick it out and give it a chance. As far as KLO, I've said it before....maybe try a "Real Oldies" thing like Ralph did on KDYL. They had quite a following. It's one thing an AM station can do that people...especially that demo...will listen to. I know KLO had some neat jingle packages in the 70s...they could dig those up. I'd love to see an AM station go back to music. That's what kinda made me wonder when 1230 came back on with the KRUZ call letters. 1230---the Cruise! Was hoping for oldies or something. Anyways....back to hiding under my usual rock.

I graduated from Weber State in '93 but should have been part of the class of '92. I had all my credits for my major (Communications) and minor, but that darn math competency requirement (which Weber still required at the time) held me back for another 9 months. I also remember the hi-fi VCR's in the communications annex, along with being required to edit a mock commercial on open reel tape with a razor blade and grease pencil. I was in the broadcasting program at Weber State the same time as Jesse Johnson and Kelly Hammer, who obviously went on to much bigger and better things than I did, at least in the broadcasting world. Len Allen's mispronunciations used to drive my mom crazy as well--she called the studio line several times to correct him. My friend Joan did the morning news on KLO with Len for the first year after she graduated, and also did weekend and fill-in shifts on KBZN (The Breeze) as well. I really enjoyed being in the broadcasting program at Weber State because it was a relatively small group of radio geeks who all shared a love for the medium, even though my current career has nothing to do with radio. I've suggested many times that KLO should try an oldies/nostalgia format, but my suggestions have thus far fallen on deaf ears. The station is already airing vintage radio programs seven nights a week, so an oldies music format would seem to be a natural fit. KLO's ratings are consistently near the bottom of the heap, so they haven't got much to lose by trying something different. The real oldies/nostalgia format has been absent from the Salt Lake/Ogden/Provo market ever since Ralph Carlson LMA'ed KDYL to an arm of China Radio International, so I think it makes sense to try and fill that void. But I've digressed enough, and I'd better shut up so as not to irk the board Director (CA) for being too far off-topic.

Well, not TOO far off topic....
I think it makes sense for 103.1 to try this format first. It's a younger demo than oldies or nostalgia and that means more money if it hits. If it doesn't work in a year or two (and somebody else hasn't been successful in it by then) I'd go for a 60's based oldies then a nostalgia format. The nostalgia might work on KLO given the source material, but oldies in particular works better on FM, even if it's a translator. And don't forget there are a bunch of rimshots that will need formats.

I still stream at work sometimes stations that play the old "Bonneville"/Lex de Azevedo format of instrumental covers of pop muzak. The problem is that the few stations still doing that format seem to think that they also need to include Adult Standards, Lounge, big band, and "Beautiful Music."
