On Friday, a U.S. District Court over-ruled the FCC, and forced them to allow a move of two VHF TV channels. A station in Ely, Nevada will be allowed to relocate "to New Jersey" (with a proposed transmitter location at Times Square, in NYC), and a TV station in Jackson, Wyoming will relocate "to Delaware" (with it's transmitter in Philadelphia). I ain't makin' this stuff up, folks! For years, there was a request that would have "moved" an AM station from Alabama to Utah, or Utah to Alabama...I can't remember which it was. Anybody remember the details? Did it actually go through?

OK,...looks like I found it. It was WAMI-AM (860) in Opp, Alabama. They proposed (in 2004) to move to Kanab, Utah, and change to 1540, later to 1560 KHz. The FCC dropped their application in January of 2012, when they failed to respond to inquiries related to their tower location, and it's nearness to the Kanab airport.
I wonder if their current owners even knew of the original application?

Yeah, the "at least 1 VHF to a state rule". That was a law pushed by NJ Senator Dollar Bill Bradley to help his friends at RKO General who were in serious danger of losing the license for what was then WOR-TV. It was never supposed to be used by anyone else, but this is where the law of unintended consequences rears its ugly head. I really like Dollar Bill, but this was a very bad move. We can talk more about it on one of the TV boards if anyone's interested. But back to your point. Yes, whenever there is a major change application window (which isn't often) you get these crazy applications to move stuff pretty much anywhere. There's at least one right along the Wasatch. KOLJ is currently in Quanah Texas and covers no towns I've ever heard of. They applied for a 10kw day/160w night site on 1200 in a residential neighborhood in Farmington and licensed to Layton. That neighborhood was there long before the application, so I have no idea how they thought they were going to put an AM site there. You can see the application stuff at transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?list=0&facid=24250

Moving to 1200 would knock out the airport TIS for SLC Intl.
KVNV Ch 3 Ely, NV is one of the stations you were talking about CA. KJWY Ch 2 Jackson, WY was the other.

KJWY is simulcasting on former sister KFXP as a .2. I wonder if that means it will be "only" a .2 service soon. Maybe it was a hopeful move to get on local cable and satellite systems as a 'full' tv station. I hope the people of New York enjoy yet another signal squeezed in while Wyoming looses one of its few local TV stations.

A few years back, an AM in South Carolina had a CP to move to Las Vegas
