My April Fool's format would consist of 24 hours of comedy routines from Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia, who are arguably the two most hated stand-up comedians of all time. To keep things interesting, I'd intersperse selections from John Cage's "Indeterminacy" LP, and the Shaggs catalog of songs in between comedy routines from Cook and Mencia. (Google "The Shaggs" and Cage's "Indeterminacy" if you're not familiar with them.) At three minutes before the top of each hour, I'd play "The Okeh Laughing Record", an obscure hit from 1922 that features a couple of German opera singers laughing for three minutes accompanied by a melancholy sounding coronetist, as the TOH ID. 😄 I believe Dr. Demento featured "The Okeh Laughing Record" on one of his radio shows many years ago.
BTW, if you want to hear what one local radio station is doing for an actual April Fool's format this weekend, listen to oldies station WDGY online. For those who aren't familiar with WDGY, the station has a long history as one of the Twin Cities Top 40/Oldies stations. But for 24 hours, WDGY is replacing its normal format with a "Country Crossover Flashback" format, a nod to WDGY's country & western format of 1977-1989. The 24 hour April Fool's format flip is part of WDGY's 100th anniversary celebration, which is being marked this year.

The station website is back online under the old "Yah Radio" branding, and KNAK claims to be "on air now". However, when I was listening to the Northern Utah SDR about 1:00 PM this afternoon, I heard CBK in Saskatchewan on 540! I checked the CBK audio stream online, and it was parallel to the signal I heard on 540 on the SDR. Weird! I didn't think it was possible for AM signals to travel that far during the day. www.yahradio540.com/

I think "Utah's Mountain" has taken a back seat to KYWH, a/k/a "Montana's River", ever since Mike Summers took over operations of that station in 2021. I haven't heard Mike on the air at 103.1 The Wave Saturday & Sunday mornings recently either, and I'm not sure where he went.

Doesn't the 89.5 UPR Ogden booster have coverage in Davis County? As amanuensis mentioned, simulcasting UPR on both 95.5 and 89.5 seems redundant in terms of signal coverage, especially in the Ogden/Weber County area. I can't understand why the 95.5 frequency would have a stipulation in the sales contract that KYFO remain a non-commercial station if it was sold, especially since 1490 KOGN used to be owned by Bible Broadcasting Network (BBN) also, and 1490 simulcast 95.5 for at least 10 years before it was sold & became a commercial station. One would think that the non-commercial stipulation would apply to both the AM & FM frequencies, since both 1490 & 95.5 were co-owned by BBN after they were purchased when KJQ's owner went bankrupt.

The only time I've ever listened to KODJ and not heard at least 5 or 6 commercials in a row is between 8:00 AM and 12 Noon on Sunday mornings, when KODJ airs repeats of Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" show. In fact, there have been times during afternoon drive when 94.1 has aired 5-6 minutes of back to back commercials, which IMO is extremely off putting. However, heavy spot loads during certain dayparts seems to be typical for iHeart stations, at least the ones that I've listened to. YMMV.

The call sign change actually took effect in mid December 2022, but I just discovered it this evening while doing some random web surfing. The sale of KNAK was consummated on December 13, 2022, but when I last checked the two local Utah SDR's, 540 was still off the air. Of course, the Delta station previously held the KNAK call from 1979-2011, and 1280 KZNS was known as KNAK from 1945 to 1976. Maybe the new owner of the station has an affinity for heritage Utah radio call letters. 🙂

KZNS and KALL have had plenty of time to pick up Rome's show since it was dropped by KLO, and both have declined to do so. I just don't think his show is as popular as it was 20 or even 10 years ago, or some station would have added "The Jungle" to their schedule by now. Then again, maybe the sports radio listeners in Utah prefer the live and local hosts on KZNS and KALL to syndicated shows like Rome.

No, KIXR doesn't have an FM translator. They're strictly a stand alone AM station like KKAT.

In terms of programming, KIXR sounds like a clone of KJJC. I guess 1230 doesn't have a very good signal in Utah County, because I can't see any other reason for the program duplication on KIXR if KJJC can be heard beyond Salt Lake County. KIXR's branding is "The Talk of Utah County". I wish there was someplace online where I could find KIXR's programming schedule. "The Radio Law Talk Show" sounds like something I'd be interested in.
I did hear Fox News at the TOH like Terry did, so I don't know where the Townhall Radio News promo I heard during Mike Gallagher's show fits in. Perhaps it was packaged with the Salem Media talk programming and just slipped through. BTW, Frank (fmdj1) posted in the Utah Radio Chat group that the KIXR antenna is diplexed off the KEYY 1450 tower in Provo. It must have taken quite a bit of engineering to get two AM stations so close in frequency broadcasting off the same tower with limited interference!

Yes, there is Class A status for FM stations, but I have no idea if there's any Class A stations in the Salt Lake City market. This table from the FCC website explains the different FM broadcast license classes and their service contours. www.fcc.gov/media/radio/fm-station-classes

I'm hearing KIXR on the Northern Utah SDR (located near Corrine) with a signal strength of S3 to S5 at Noon local time. Sounds like they have a conservative talk format; as I heard the Mike Gallagher show when I tuned in, and a promo for Townhall Radio News. The West Jordan SDR is still receiving a faint image of KALL 700. KIXR and KUTN still don't have websites or online streaming, but it sounds like KIXR has a talk format similar to KJJC 1230. The web page for "The Radio Law Talk Show" lists KIXR as one of their affiliates.

Other than reducing the spot load during certain dayparts, I wouldn't do anything with KODJ. Yes, I realize that the station has to sell advertising to pay its bills. But if I have to listen to 6-8 30 second commercials to hear 3-4 songs followed by another lengthy commercial break, you've lost me as a listener.

Maybe it's just my location, but 102.7 has never had good coverage in NE Ogden. That's why I listen to 1160 AM instead of the FM frequency. And my experience with 102.7 is that the signal starts "picket fencing" on my car radio by the time I get to Brigham City, regardless of its Class C status. YMMV.
