The trustee for KNIV 104.7 left the station on the air with an open carrier for several months after the deal with AASAA Media to buy the station fell through. AASAA Media is (or was) owned by Nicolas Vicente, who also owned the now deleted KXOL 1660; which was also on the air with a dead carrier for several months before the station was shut down by the FCC. I'm seeing a pattern here with Vicente's radio properties. :-)
FWIW, KOGN is also silent as of this posting--not even a dead carrier on 1490 at the moment. Should make for some interesting "graveyard" DX'ing at my location tonight if KOGN is still off after sunset.

It would appear KMRI is off the air, I logged KWRN Apple Valley, CA Saturday night from Laramie. They could've been running a dead carrier, sounded like they were Saturday afternoon/evening, but didn't seem to be late Saturday night radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?sr=Y&s=C&call=kwrn&nav=

KMRI is indeed still on the air with an open carrier. The signal on 1550 is strong enough to light up 3-4 bars on the signal strength indicator on my Sangean PR-D4W, and I'm located in NE Ogden. 1490 KOGN is still off air as well.

I also heard "Radio Catolic Mundial", KXEX 1550 Fresno with KMRI "silent"

And with KMRI "silent", KUAZ Tucson shows up decently before sunset

I believe David pointed out some time ago that a dead carrier is considered silent for FCC purposes. It doesn't make sense to me either, but the FCC is a government bureaucracy that very often doesn't make sense to us normals. This is a good thing for those who make their living trying to decipher what the FCC does.
One of the technical characteristics of AM is that because all the radio cares about to make a sound is the difference between signal levels, it makes it fairly simple to be receiving two different programs from two different signals at the same time. The audio signals are complementary. This is also why aircraft communications are done with AM. Two pilots can both be talking on the same frequency at the same time and both will be heard. This is different from FM where you have something called the capture effect where only the stronger signal will grab the radio and only that program will be heard.

No, its not considered silent by the fcc.. not in terms of an application for special temporary authority to be silent. to the fcc, silent is no rf being transmitter......

In theory you are correct, but in practice the situation is quite different. There have been cases where stations have remained on the air with an open carrier even AFTER the STA request has been filed and approved by the FCC. An example would be KNIV 104.7, which remained on air with a dead carrier after the deal with Nicolas Vicente wasn't consummated; until MAV Media took over the frequency with its own programming. Unless the FCC has some sort of proof that a station's transmitter is still on after an STA to remain silent is approved, they don't seem to care much. FWIW, I don't recall mentioning that a dead carrier is considered silent, but maybe I had a senior moment.

Thanks CA. I was thinking it was a more recent post, rather than one from two years ago. I still don't understand the rationale behind leaving a transmitter on the air with an open carrier, especially since the STA request was filed due to financial issues. Might as well shut it off and save $$$ on the electric bill, especially if the transmitter is still on air with 10 KW 24/7.

Morgan Skinner of Rockwell Media Services is involved in this KMRI mess so don't surprised by anything that happens.

I worked with Morgan Skinner briefly about 50 years ago at KMUR 1230 in Murray. He must be close to a thousand years old by now.
