There is a trend I've been seeing quite a bit and I'd like to address it. This is not a news board, it's a discussion board. Posting news that happens is certainly part of what we do here, but it is not the primary focus. If news has happened, chances are most of us have seen it on the various news sites. The big thing that we do here is talk about what's happening (hence the name.) If you post news, please tell is why you think it's important, why you think it's a good idea or a bad idea, or commentary of some sort. That's what will make this a site worth visiting.

Fwiw, I am one of those (few apparently) who don't see things on the news sites. I've been reading this board, almost daily, over the last year or two. I decided to become a member a couple of months ago so I could participate in the discussion. As a totally blind person who uses a screen reader to get around the internet, some sites are accessible and some are not. I used to be an avid reader of Lynn Arave's radio column in the Deseret News every Friday. We have a service for the blind that allows us to hear newspapers over the telephone. When Lynn retired I didn't have a constant source of Salt Lake area radio news for a lot of years. I wondered if there was some place on the internet for that and so I think I Googled "Salt Lake Radio" or something like that and found this board. I've been getting my radio news from here ever since. It was here where I found out that Spence Checkitts had stepped away from the Zone. It was here I found out that KBYU was going to drop classical music. etc. So, after reading this, it sounds like I've been doing the opposite of what this board was intended for. I find out about stuff here, then I either choose the links that someone provides here or go searching on the internet for more information, and then I do come back here to see what people are saying about it. Now I realize the needs of the many must always outway the needs of the few, but the fact that people post news events here is part of what keeps me coming back, daily. I guess it would be better for me to get my news elsewhere and then come back here to post about it. I know there are national radio news sites like Insight Radio that do give news about Salt Lake Radio but, from the very limited time I've spent there, it's mixed in with radio news from everywhere else in the country. I would respectfilly submit that, in order to discuss happenings we need to know about them. Would someone be willing to post links to sites or boards that are more intended for posting news? Thank you very much.

I agree oldiesfunhouse! After running radio websites for years that's what these sites should primarily be about and that's talking about changes and news stories that's happening. Hopefully CA reconsiders his post.....Because people come here to to see what's changing in the radio biz around the state. I personally don't know CA but we have been together posting back n forth for many years... How Long you ask?? Are you ready for this CA.....When I started the other sites I was single and no children...Now I've been married for 20 years and have an 18 year old... and I'm not disrespecting you CA but I'm not one to go to all the other news sites that much anymore and what's funny this is the first place I come everytime the computer boots to see if there's any new NEWS! I remember the days when there was SO MUCH going on with radio in Salt Lake with changes that something new was posted almost daily and to see CA's point that maybe there's not much news lately....Formats have been stagnant lately nothing changing in a long time all the frequency swaps dust has settled...Yea it's been quite Maybe add a section for just news only? Probably will be the most visited section on the board (I'd place a wendover bet on that) I personally am not interested in posts saying K-BURR should put The Osmonds in the rotation because I feel that's a good idea because it's what I want to hear? But then again I do enjoy this site so don't ban me CA We've been together for 20 + years DSP

With all due respect CA, some people who frequent this board just don't have time to check all the news and radio trade sites every day or two to find information about the topics covered here. I've always tried to post brief comments about an article before posting a link to a site, but because of concerns over copyright violations I'm limited in what I can say. Moreover, articles published on local and national news sites & the radio trade sites change every day or two, and I feel like posting links here gives people who may have missed a particular story a chance to read the article at their leisure and contribute to the discussion. It was here that I learned about how to search the FCC database and discovered the trade sites like RadioInsight and InsideRadio; and many times I've been made aware of radio and TV changes and trends that I might otherwise have missed. As oldiesfunhouse mentioned, there are a lot of "lurkers" who read the posts here and decide to become members after perusing the board for a period of time. I feel like we should continue to encourage others to become members and contribute to the discussion, and sometimes all it takes to accomplish that is for someone to read a post with a link to an article they've missed. Just my two bits worth--over and out!

As is so often the case I think I've failed to make myself clear. I apologize for that. By news sites I meant radio news sites such as allaccess.com and radioinsight.com. I also should have made it clearer that I don't mean to discourage posting news here. We've always done that and will continue to do so. What I would like though would be to not just say something has happened and post a link to a story about it. Those types of posts aren't (in my opinion) very interesting. It's fine to post a link to a story or even just report something has happened, but why not add your own opinion as well and start a discussion. If someone cares enough about something to post about it then they almost certainly have an opinion about it. Tell us what that is. I admit I'm guilty of this as well and I'm going to try to do better to engage you the readers. I'd just like to see more of that across the board, so to speak. If you don't, it won't get your post deleted or get you banned from the board or anything, so don't worry about that. I just want to make this site as interesting as possible. I appreciate the feedback. Spirited discussion is exactly what I'm going for and that's what I got. And again in an effort to be clear, nobody's in any danger of being banned. I think things are working OK as they are. I just want to add to it, not remove anything that we're already doing. Hopefully this clarifies what I'm trying to say. If not, I'll try again.
