Perhaps I am the last to know, but I learned today exactly when KBYU will drop PBS and switch to BYUtv programming.
KBYU Eleven is Becoming BYUtv As BYU Broadcasting consolidates its television operations, channel 11 will air BYUtv in place of KBYU Eleven effective Monday, July 2, 2018, at 1:00 a.m. MDST. What does this mean for you, our loyal viewers? It means you and your family can now enjoy Utah’s only nationwide television network in high definition.
With this change comes a powerful and refined focus toward bringing you new, original programming. We're forging ahead with high expectations and are excited for the possibilities this merge creates.
Whether you're a longtime viewer of BYUtv or you're coming over from KBYU Eleven, we invite you to grab your loved ones and enjoy the family-oriented programs found on BYUtv!

The original announcement said it was effective June 30, but July 1 makes more sense. That would be the start of a new quarter and for a lot of organizations the start of a new fiscal year. Looking at the schedule for July 1 it looks like the PBS programming ends early on the 1st and then I think the rest of the shows that day are BYU produced. Why they didn't just start the simulcast on the 1st itself I don't know. Seems weird to me.
The line "It means you and your family can now enjoy Utah’s only nationwide television network in high definition" bothers me though. BYUtv on 11.2 is ALREADY in HD and has been for quite some time. The data rates for 11.1 and 11.2 are the same right now. It's possible they meant on cable/satellite but that's a different matter.

The switch happened on schedule at 1AM. If you weren't paying close attention you might not even have known anything happened. After a final legal ID with the 11 branding, 11.1 just seamlessly switched to the same feed as BYUtv complete with BYUtv bug. At that point both 11.1 and 11.2 were running identical programming. At the same time, 11.3 switched from the BYUtvi feed to a slide of the old logo and ended programming. Sometime between 1AM and 2:45AM 11.2 and 11.3 went completely dead. No feed, no PSIP, no nothing. The only thing coming in over 11 is the 11.1 BYUtv feed. In checking the stories about this, I think the removal of BYUtvi might be permanent.

Hmmm.... I wonder if they plan to do any other digital sub-channels?

The only other thing I can think of that they have are the KBYU-FM and BYU Radio feeds. They could certainly do that. Maaybe BYUtv2 with a time shifted feed?

Interesting that the announcement on the KBYU TV web site links to KUED & KUEN to show viewers where they can see the PBS programs formerly on KBYU 11. I wonder if KBYU will lose viewers to 7 & 9 who aren't interested in watching BYU TV.

I think that's pretty much a foregone conclusion.

I think that's pretty much a foregone conclusion. My thought was that KBYU-TV might lose more viewers by directing people to the KUED/KUEN web sites, rather than just let disgruntled viewers find the information on their own. It's surprising how many people don't know how to (or don't want to) do their own internet research.
