As if all those other goings on with the AM band weren't enough, we might have to throw 780 into the mix.
Scanning the AM band I found that the radio stopped on 780 even though the sound coming from the speakers sounded like plain white noise. It didn't stop anywhere else across the entire band. I'm not sure I'm reading everything on the FCC site correctly, but I think the construction permit was probably tolled while there was an objection but the CP is going to expire soon. That could explain this. Might be worth keeping an ear on 780 to see if anything shows up.

Were you listening at night or during the day? If your radio stopped on 780 at night, I'm thinking the white noise you heard could have been sideband IBOC hash from KKOB 770. I'm pretty sure they broadcast in HD 24/7. There hasn't been any updates to the FCC file for RAMS III's 780 construction permit since 2013, and I believe an AM CP is only good for 3 years from its issue date.

It was day and this radio doesn't pay attention to IBOC sidehash anyway (even KSL's.) That does give me an idea though. They could be running a digital only IBOC signal. I don't have a digital radio though.
CP's are only good for 36 months but there was an objection that lasted for a couple of years, so I'm not exactly sure of what the expiration would be.

And now 780 has gone poof. The construction permit has been canceled, so it's dead Jim.

And now 780 has gone poof. The construction permit has been canceled, so it's dead Jim. I'm not surprised. It just didn't make sense to me that RAMS III would continue to pursue the CP for 780 once they got 1580 KWLO on the air, especially since so many AM stations have gone dark in the past few years. Throw in the difficulty of obtaining tower site land and/or diplexing an AM signal from an existing tower, and it's a substantial investment for what may not yield a good ROI.
