IHeart buys 910 KWDZ, now has 7 stations in SLC. Only makes since all the equipment was at there location anyways, How about a true oldies station?

I'm honestly confused by this move. IHeart (then Clear Channel) had a spare AM with a better signal (570) when they migrated KNRS to FM. The mostly second tier talk programming they put on as Freedom 570 went pretty much nowhere and they put the KNRS format back in addition to the FM. If they really wanted an AM, why not put it on 570? Is the addition of the AM really helping KNRS so much that they really want it on both AM & FM? For a station like KSL to do that makes sense. The 50kw day & night blowtorch definitely helps. But 5kw, even at the bottom of the dial? I'd have to see some numbers, but I'm skeptical.

While I'd love to see a true (or real, take your pick) oldies station on AM again to fill the void left by KDYL, I doubt it will happen. My guess is that we'll eventually get another sports or Spanish language station on 910 AM, since no radio programmer seems to want to be adventurous with AM formats in 2015 except for the smaller locally oriented stations. I'll still keep my fingers crossed for an oldies or adult standards station, though: ANYTHING different and new on the AM band would be better than more of the same. And the lack of measurable ratings for KLO and KKAT-AM pretty much proves that second tier talk radio is more or less a waste of air time, at least in the Salt Lake/Ogden/Provo market. Note to IHeart programming dept.: You have two stations in the Sarasota area (the Sunny 1450/1320 AM combo) with an excellent adult standards (or easy listening, as IHeart calls it) format; how about trying the format on 910 AM so I don't have to be tied to my computer to listen?

Sorry David but I can't see someone as big as iHeart putting a standards station on in this market. Florida has a huge retirement population that can offset the very high demos that a station like that would get and we don't have anything remotely close to that here. A 50's/60's older oldies station is possible as a complement to KODJ, but they have to be careful not to cannibalize each other.
I would be surprised if they didn't have a plan already.

Yeah, I know it was futile to suggest an adult standards format in this market, but I just thought I'd throw it out there anyway. One thing is for sure, though: I won't be in Florida again any time soon. I visited Tampa back in the early 90's to see some old friends and hated the climate. I'd rather freeze my butt off in Minnesota for six months out of the year than retire in the Sunshine State.

We now know a few more details about the sale. First, the agreement was written up on May 4 but wasn't announced for 3 1/2 weeks. Things move really slowly in a bureaucracy apparently. Second, the combined price for KWDZ and WRDZ-FM which covers about half the Indianapolis market is $1.95 million. That sounds like a bargain to me.

KWDZ is off the air as of this writing. Don't know if that means iHeart is getting ready to unveil the station's new format, but keeping an ear to 910 AM in the next couple days might yield some clues.

IIRC, there was no LMA before the sale for KWDZ, but there was for the WRDZ-FM part of the deal and that happened several weeks ago. The sale hasn't been approved yet, so until that's finalized I wouldn't expect any changes at 910.

Or.... The computer needed a reboot? Disney back on 910 as of 11:55pm I listened to 910 for about 1/2 hour last night and the signal kept cutting in and out, so it probably was the automation computer in need of a reboot. I listened again this AM around 7:30 and the station was off air completely; now KWDZ is back on the air but with an open carrier (no audio). I'm thinking that the automation took a dump over the long holiday weekend and no one noticed until this morning. Does being on air with an open carrier qualify as broadcasting under FCC rules?

KWDZ could always put the tape back on with the exercise beat track.

I know your question was a joke, but the serious answer is yes as long as they run the required legal ID. There would be issues with serving the public and such at renewal time, but in the short term it's perfectly legal. Dumb, but legal.

The station isn't broadcasting a legal ID; in fact, KWDZ has been on the air with nothing but an open carrier since Monday night/Tuesday morning. This seems like a huge waste of a 5,000 watt (daytime) signal to me, and there's also the issue of powering down at night. I know that the night time power reduction for most AM stations is automated, but if the station is on air with no audio that probably means the computer which controls power down isn't working correctly either. I would think that by now someone at IHeart would have noticed the absence of audio on KWDZ's signal, which makes me even more curious as to what's going on with 910 AM. ??

Someone in the engineering dept. finally woke up from their long summer nap: Radio Disney is back up and running on 910.

And it was gone again as of 8PM Sun. However, the sale was approved last Tuesday. We'll see.
